installing a torque converter
Somebody help! How much transmission fluid do I put in the converter before I put it on? Are there any tricks to getting it right? Does it bottom out against the tranny or what? Thanks for the help. It's my first time with this if you couldn't tell.

If I can rembember correctlly, I put at least a quart in mine, then pushed, and spun clockwise, till it was all the way in.

POUR IN ABOUT 3 OR 4 QUARTS OF TRANNY FLUID. FILL IT RIGHT UP, & DEPENDING HOW EMTY IT IS WILL DEPEND ON HOW MUCH IT HOLDS. PUT A NEW PUMP SEAL IN THE TRANNY (ABOUT $3). PUT THE TORQUE CONV. ON THE SHAFT, & ROTATE IT AS YOU PUSH GENTLY BUT FIRMLY ON IT. YOU WILL FEEL IT CLICK,& MOVE REARWORD ABOUT 1/4" OR 3/8" THREE TIMES. BOLT UP THE TRANNY TO THE MOTOR. YOU SHOULD HAVE ABOUT 3/8" CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE T/C & THE FLEXPLATE. THE TORQUE CONVERTER SHOULD ROTATE FREELY BEFORE YOU BOLT IT TO THE FLEXPLATE, OR ELSE YOU DON'T HAVE IT INDEXED IN PROPERLY. IT'S A PIECE OF CAKE, ONCE YOU'VE DONE IT A FEW TIMES. GOOD LUCK JOHN

1 qt does it, and work/spin it back until you can't get your fingers between the TQ and the bellhousing. Sometimes it drops back easy and sometimes it don't.

The 3 tranny shops I deal with at work all say one quart is fine. One even says NEVER put in any more than one...but no one has been able to say why you don't want to do that.

When we install one it gets 1qt for basic lubrication only. Then pour 4qts in through the dipstick tube, start the engine briefly then add another 3qts. Once you have 8 qts in it, you know it won't run dry while your checking/adding the fluid. DON'T try and pour it all in at once, you'll find most of it coming out the vent hole lol.
Andy I believe most will say 1qt for lubrication reasons, then they would prefer the rest be poured into the pan so the filter will have a chance to remove anything before it hits the pump/valvebody. |
