Cleaning up frame

I'm getting ready to start cleaning up my frame, I have a question though I know typically everyone does a wire wheel on it, but is it possible to just use sand paper and get the same result?

Since I'm too lazy to separate the body from the frame I used a hand sander and sandpaper. Tried to scrap off as much undercoating as possible. If I had the time I'd use a wirewheel though just so I could get as close to bare metal as possible.

Do you just have a bare frame? I did my frame off with a wire wheel, needle gun and sander. used 50 and 80 grit then Zero rust paint

Right now I just have my bed off, but I'm looking at taking the cab off soon when I get some more room in my garage.

Why wouldn't you use a wire wheel? They are ideal for preparing a frame, especially for pitting.

I just haven't purchased one yet, and I already have a sander that's the only reason why, I do plan on getting one in the near future it's something that's just for the time being.

sand paper will work as long as there isn't heavy damage on there.... I used a wire wheel and it took only an hour or so

Alright thanks! Yeah I want to get a wire wheel because I know it's much much easier to do the frame.

I'm from the Dirty Bay (Baytown). I recommend Harbor Freight for any of the wire wheel discs themselves. But I'd try a pawn shop or something for the grinder. But then again if you can get a drill attachment wire wheel for your drill it'd be just as good.

The ideal way would be to sand blast it. Sandblasting will get into the areas you can not get into with the grinder. Grinder is the best next thing bu you will still have to do allot of hand sanding.

I really would like to get it sandblasted but i'm at the point right now where I'm unable to take the whole truck apart and just have the bare frame, I'm just trying to get a temporary better look for the time being I do plan on having it sandblasted at a point in time.

I just used a cheap wire wheel in an electric drill, and then hit the frame with Rustoleum hammered black. Turned out real nice and is easy to touch up.

Having wire wheeled a frame before, I honestly think sandblasting is the best bet. Its fairly cheap and gets all the insides of the frame much better than a wire wheel. After doing it both ways, I'll never do the wire wheel way again. All the wires that break off end up stuck in your clothes. Not fun..

Thanks, yeah I'm waiting to be able to clean out the garage completely so that I can take the cab off and pull everything that way its all frame, and like you said just get it sand blasted. Whats the difference between sandblasting and media blasting?

I've tried a bunch of different wheels. Just go ahead and get a cheap electric grinder and a twisted cable wheel. It won't get eaten up like the brass wire wheels. If your $20 grinder dies in a year, get another one!

Oh, and you'll find that wearing safety glasses and welding gloves will work well for you!

I used a straight wire wheel on a 4" grinder as well. I also used a flap disc sanding disc too. They also make a cup style wire wheel. The straight wire wheel and flap disc will make quick work out of it.

Yeah safety is my top priority so I was definitely planning to have some safety goggles and some gloves on to protect me

VERY DUSTY. I'm in the middle of doing this on my truck, and I'm glad I have a respirator, although a really good dust mask will work as well.

Well, I guess I understand it's gonna be dusty and I know something will need to be done to protect my lungs. But am I being paranoid that the dust is gonna settle on everything and stain rust on it?

Don't worry about the dust contaminating everything around you First, wood and plastics can't rust. Second, Metals, such as you car, are protected with paint so do not touch the "rust" and third, it's dry dust so you can remove is with some air very easily.
