Fake SPID
This truck is going to be at the Mecum Auction in Kansas City this next week. The SPID looks funny to me – I mean it looks fake funny.
Check out the VIN number, the wheelbase, and then the model number. What’s wrong with this picture? The seller has it listed as a short bed. I’ll bet when I get there to inspect it I’ll find a cut frame………or am I missing something?

Re: Fake SPID
Never seen a VIN start with CIE on these trucks.
Never seen a SPID where the RPO codes were not in alphabetical order. Wrong RPO for Tach and am/fm. |

Re: Fake SPID
This is definitely a fake/reprinted spid. Not that that is all bad, but if he passes it off as the real thing call his bluff.
Here is a spid pic thread with a lot of good information about spids http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=282003 |

Re: Fake SPID
Thanks everyone – I needed a sanity check. The SPID just looked too fishy to me. Where did the CIE in the VIN come from? The 115 wheelbase number doesn’t correlate to the model number. The model number (the 09 digits) is for a long bed. Who knows? It’s frustrating to see the seller indicate the short bed status in his description of the truck and to boast the build sheet still being attached to the glovebox. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. He may not be aware it’s not a real short bed.
Here’s the listing: http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_de...e=&startRow=37 I will be there next week and will look over the truck. Maybe it’s a cut frame, maybe it’s a frame swap. I hope I can figure it out. At least he didn’t list it as an original short bed. I’m so glad to be a member of this site. It has given me the knowledge to be very aware of the little details. A year ago I could have possibly bought this truck and never been the wiser. BTW - It is a great looking truck.

Re: Fake SPID
Oh Dear! The seller might have a leg to stand on. The seller states "Build sheet still attached to glove box" and in fact it is. The remade SPID is just placed on top of it. You can see the original SPID peaking out on the top right side and along the top.

Re: Fake SPID
115" wb and 09 model # = deliberate deception by an uninformed seller. That doesn't mean that this seller is a crook, but it does mean that somewhere in this truck's history, somebody screwed the pooch with intentional deception. Personally, I'd never consider buying such a truck unless I was never, ever going to sell it, Just to avoid the nightmare of trying to sell it like it is, with impossible numbers on the spid. If, however, one had one's heart set on this truck, the very first thing I would do after checking it out in person and figuring out what it really is, is to then order a new spid from chip flyer so it is at least technically correct. And, live with the fact, of course, that When you sell it that you must be upfront with the prospective buyer and tell him it's not the original spid.

Re: Fake SPID
It's a beautiful truck. He would have been better off with no SPID at all.

I dont see anything wrong with shortening a truck but trying to pass it off as original is not cool. Anyway it is a very nice truck, if it were mine the first thing I would do is peel that thing off!

Re: Fake SPID
Well, as has been stated above it is so wrong its almost funny. But then fraud is not a laughing matter.
Here is the presented spid and I have marked the old spid ouline. The second picture is a correct original 71 Baltimore SPID the first is purported to be. I'd like to see a VIN plate and rivets. BTW the serials are about 1200 apart between the two pictures.

Re: Fake SPID
Tim,
I will be there next week. Sometimes the listed vehicles are no shows so there is no guarantee this truck will be there. If it is, I can attempt to document the frame ID and the door VIN plate and rivets.

Re: Fake SPID
It’s up for auction so I don’t know who will actually get it. I have no plans to bid on this truck. We go to the auctions and when I was looking through the listings I found the truck. The weird SPID got my attention so I decided to share it here.
