Parking brake help please;)

Have you ever lost something in your garage/shop? I lost/misplaced some parking brake parts and I can't find them anywhere! I just took the parts off a few days ago and they've disappeared!

Maybe I won't need the parts I've misplaced, but here's what I've got;

The brake pedal assembly came out of a 73 Impala.



So the cable comes down and goes through the floor and a little bracket I'll make to hold it. However, this cable is broken too.



Here I will make a hole for the parking brake cable to go through the floor support and follow the outside of the frame:


Then using this pulley from the Impala will make a turn going towards the middle of the truck towards the brackets I lost! Then I need another pulley like this; maybe I can get something at ACE to make work.




The two cables that come off of the backing plate aren't any good; they're very rusty and not useable. They appeared to be factory, even had a grease fitting(someone forgot to grease it!).

And can someone please identify this rear axle?




questions:
I found the factory cables that come off of the backing plate on Ebay for 130. but are there other cables that come off of a backing plate that will work?
I can purchase the entire parking brake system for a 73 Impala off of ebay for 130.00, but I don't know how much of it I could actually use.

Somewhere here someone posted that replacement pulleys can be found at Home Depot/Lowes made for garage doors. I think if I were you I'd pull the rear cables and head to Autozone, O'Reilly's, etc and pick out duplicate replacements.

i removed mine and let it sit in Aero-Kroil for 2 days. It loosened up all the rust and made it roll like new again. That was for the pulley. Sorry I can't be of any help on the cables. I'm running a chevelle rear end and a relocated factory E-brake handle

I am running a 12 bolt rear end from a chevelle I used the rear brake cables from a TF repo's they worked. Bought them off ebay, brothers sells them

The Impala setup looks similar to the 74 truck I used. Note that the end circled below is designer to fit is a sturdy fixed hole and secured with a u-shaped clip. This holds the outside while the interior cable moves. Your truck should have had the same puller and bracket unless it was removed by the PO. They are available as reproductions, but any pulley and bracket will work, you could just use a piece of tube over a bolt, all you need is something that will rotate at the cable change in direction.

Y'all are the greatest~ I like Dan's(and of course all of the ideas were superb) idea of going to Oreilly's but those guys do not like to see me walk in the door! They cannot function without a reference! Rude dude, I looked at the parts at Brothers, the link you gave me, but I don't think those would work. My rear axle is not the original axle.

I got the cable to slide, but the springs are shot, and the metal spider finger looking retainer is totally gone on one and the other~ I fear is shot too. I maybe could go by application at the parts store if I knew what this rear axle came off of (I know it's a 12 bolt )? Maybe tomorrow I'll head over to Oreilly's and see what they can do.



Orrie, I do plan to fabricate a bracket, I think that may be easier than sourcing the parts I need. Nothing like retro fitting!

I feel your pain. I quit going to Autozone for that very reason. Advance Auto in my neighborhood is the last place who hires old mechanics or in my case an x-GM PR guy. That guy has an answer for everything.

It is a truck 12 bolt. Just for grins I looked up a 78 1/2 ton at rockauto and came up with the attached. At least it gives you a starting reference point. They look the same as my 74 1/2 ton 6 lug. I would like to believe they all used the same one. Rockautos price is $10.84 each.

Thank you Orrie! I just went out and checked the measurements on mine; the entire length is 61 1/2"; the conduit is 32". I believe that maybe when whomsoever installed this rear axle, they used the existing original/or not original rear brake cables? The truck did have the entire old hand pull system, but everything was seized and it was all coming out anyway.



Andy, how about this, I ask for a part, lets say a water pump, what's the make and year? They ask. I tell them, but they know the truck does not have the factory engine, but they ask anyway! I told them I needed a lower radiator hose, he ran up and had the factory lower hose for a 213, and wasn't near close to fit my 350sbc! I just look at them cross eyed.

Like I said the rear cables are repo TF and worked on the chevelle rear end brakes.

on the passenger side axle tube there should be some numbers and letters that -when you look up rear axle codes -should tell you what you have - ya might have to use some cleaner or sandpaper towards the top of the tube - code should should be there

This thread may help you. At least the input by Russell at the end. If you follow his method it'll keep you from having to deal with the dufus (dufi?) at your local auto parts store. How it helps.

Thank you Dan! I checked out that link~ Russell did an excellent job using his old brake handle! I like that idea, but I think I would still like to go with my floor pedal. Besides, I think my fuse panel that I put in is in the way of the original brake handle, but I'll check. I sent the (www.controlcables.com) some pictures and the links from our truck site. Getting a little excited here! I hope to hear from them soon, but in the meantime, I may go ahead and take the rear axle down and clean it up~ looks pretty nasty, it also needs brake new brake lines~ then since I'll be finding out what rear axle I do have thanks to Daze, the guys at Oreilly's should be able to locate a backplate cover gasket, I'm almost worried to take the back plate off in fear of what I may find! Or maybe I could just work on the axle in the truck, then take a can of black Krylon or Rustoleum and pretty it up a bit

Napa has great reference books, gives lengths and has pictures, I just put on a set that looks exactly like yours, started looking at 72 nova. And I think ended up with 76 nova, to get the length I wanted, I'm actually pulling these new ones off , decided to do a disc conversion, if you're not in a hurry, you can have these. Or, they were only like $10. At napa

Hi Skip! hmm, that's very nice of you But if the parts you have were only 10-20 ish dollars, I wouldn't want to waste your time having to mail these things! I could just go buy them. I'm amazed how what a pita this parking brake system is! I haven't heard from that company yet~ let me talk to them first to see what they have to offer/sell me

I would have never thought I would have room for the stock hand pull brake lever! I would have bet money that it would not fit! but it clears just by a tiddle! I may just go ahead and mimic what Russell did. The reason being, the way I have it, the brake cable is on the outside of the frame, whereas this would be on the inside of the frame making it easier to run the cables.

Maybe this will help. I ran the foot cable conduit thru and existing hole in the frame, then thru the original cable holes in the crossmember (in the photo I had not looped it thru the crossmember yet). I made up an adjustable bracket with the original clevis pin. I shortened the original cable to the rear, a looped in and secured with swage fitting. I had to relocate the pulley to the rear so the cable missed my MC. Everything else is stock 59 at the pivot brackets. To use the 74 rear end cables I had to move the conduit end angle brackets but the length fit the 59 pivot assembly on the frame fine.
