1996-2000 Vortec Engine Swap (Help)
I was wondering if anyone knew of any sites that covered a 4.9 L or 5.3 L Vortec engine swap into a 1972 C10. I will either be getting a motor and tranny from a Caprice (cop car) or a truck. I'm sure others have done this but before I get started I want to see what I'm in for. I have looked for a while now and just can't find much. I would appriciate any responses. Thank-you.

Sorry, either the 5.7 from a 1991 - 1996 Caprice or 5.3 from a new truck. Thank-you Jason. I should have been more specific.

That's neat! If you use the cop car engine are you going to put the "Interceptor" badge on the back?

The cheapest/easiest swap would be a 96-98 in trucks Vortec 5.7 or up until 2000 in vans, it is basicall a first gen small block. If you want to go to a 5.3/6.0 street & performance sells motormounts for some applications.

Do those 96-98 truck Vortecs have a mechanical fuel pump boss or is it electric pump only? I am assuming it doesnt have the boss so you are going to have to run an electric pump and all that jazz with it...Right?
thanks CHRIS

It uses a high pressure fuel pump as far as I know. It is in the gas tank so I would run an inline.
I was definitally thinking about getting a 5.7 out of a van but I have a lead on a 2000 truck that is totalled. Thank you for the replies. |

Here's a pick of my '97 truck engine. I converted to carb and while there is a boss for the pump, it isn't usable, it's blocked off. Stock, they use a high pressure in-tank pump. I'm running an electric pump myself for the carb. The wiring harness and pcm (you need a '96 pcm) made the cost to convert too high for the return. Maybe some day I'll go fuel injected, but it will be some aftermarket or TPI. You know looks and all the benefits. I' run the exact serpentine setup that came on the truck. Don't have the a/c plumbed yet though. The fan shroud is a BB shroud for our model with the '97 stock fan blade. Fit is perfect.

Late model serpentine belt systems are cool! My 78’ K10 with a crate 454 HO is set up like a L29 BB 454 from a 2000 model year old style 2500 series truck. Will be adding sequential fuel injection later this summer once I score a GM marine controller.
