pre tinted windows???

hey guys, just wondering if theres any way we can get a hold of the pre tinted or smoked windows like a lot of the old street rods have. The "tint" is actually placed between the window glass panes a lot like a smoked glass table would have.

Anyone know if we can get this type of window for our front side windows or are we not able to get it.

This pic of this truck shows the "pre tinted or smoked" windows, it appears he has this style window on all 4 windows.

Re: pre tinted windows???

a good glass man should be able to cut you those out of grey laminated glass.

Re: pre tinted windows???

This guy seems to make or have made locally the one piece glass for our squares... maybe you can contact him to make em pr-tinted? maybe he can cut or have cut the 2 piece windows in pre-tint as well?

contact him, and keep us posted with your findings.

Re: pre tinted windows???

You don't want laminated glass, it'll break/crack in a short time, besides no one makes it to fit these trucks. The tempered glass is far superior, tinted tempered is colored glass, no middle sheet like laminated. There are tinted curved side glass kits made, they should be avail in a couple of colors. One Piece Products appears to be the source, doesn't say what colors available

Re: pre tinted windows???

Most glass shops dont want to touch this. In my 69 GMC it has flat glass so I put smoked glass in but it still had to meet a certain glass codes to be safe. I have seen some glass crack if its not correct, even when you slam the door too hard. Im pretty sure thats why the auto industry went to a curved glass to stop this aftermarket practice. Most guys that chop their roofs even go to Lexan.

All glass currently Is a laminated safety glass that's tempered. Meaning that the glass shatters and the gel layer between the two keeps the glass drone exploding everywhere. This is usually on front windows only. I imagine this "gel" in the middle is tinted or the glass itself is colored. I know corvettes front windows are slightly tinted. I'm actually going to lightly smoke the front window for my stepside. Then tint the rest.

My thoughts exactly. It would seem rather expensive to get smoked glass and have it installed when you could get a light tint film put on for a fraction of the cost, and have the same look.

im trying to avoid this because i dont want to deal with eventual chipped, scratched, bubbled tint etc. having a full smoked window is much cleaner in my opinion. theres no lines where it was cut etc and there isnt a film to accidentally scratch or chip etc.

Re: pre tinted windows???

Only the windshield is laminated safety glass. Side windows, door glass is not laminated on modern cars and light trucks. It does break into tiny pieces when broken.
Also most windshields are tinted not just corvettes.
Adding aftermarket window tint (film) to the front windshield is illegal in most if not every state. (The whole window not just a strip which is Usually ok)

not sure about where you are but here
I was recently pulled over/given a warning for my car
there would be a line part way down the glass but
the tint can't go lower then the windshield wiper wipes over

Square body suburban tinted rear door window glass is laminated. I put tinted suburban doors in om crew, and one of the rear door windows is broken and obviously laminated. And a many newer cars are coming with laminated door glass. I don't know if there is a federal mandate, but i feel all manufacturers will go to this in the future.

Re: pre tinted windows???

I agree...This glass looks so much cleaner and probably stays that way, especially these old pickups...seems you always get scratches in tint from windows going up and down. Let me know if you find a place and what it costs....thanks

Re: pre tinted windows???

At least we're gone from the days of DIY window film, that would turn purple after a couple years in the sun... which i do have a couple rolls in an old filing cabinet in my garage.

Re: pre tinted windows???

They do still sell rolls of tint even pre cut kits for a lot of cars.As far as tint inside the glass it will be one off and probably pricey as hell too.
