Installing a Tach

Howdy,
I am considering installing a tach in my '68 C20 and was told that there are several things that I need to do before I can install it. Does anyone know what they are?

It's easiest if you have already upgraded to HEI ignition. Just buy a plug that goes in the side of the cap that says "tach", then splice in one cable to it and the other to the fuse block

If you search my old posts, I did a write up when I installed one. I went with a stock look. If you do that, there's a lot more work involved, but it really looks nice

Guessing you are referring to adding a factory style in dash tach.

Is your truck a light cluster or a gauge option (RPO Z53) truck?

If it is a light cluster truck you will need to get a gauge cluster with or without a tach.
The connector plug for the cluster needs to be re-pinned when converting to a gauge cluster.

Also the coolant sender needs to changed if you have lights to a gauge correct sender.

The oil pressure line needs to be added.

Not sure if the sense loop for the ammeter is present in a light cluster truck or not.

The tach can be added to a non gauge cluster with an aftermarket kit.
Or you can scrounge all the tach correct cluster parts to assemble one.
You will need a tach harness too.

Alternatively you can perform a conversion with a camaro tach, that looks fairly good too. There are threads on this if you want to search for it.

Also my 67 has the manual choke on the top right with wipers and lights on the top left side of the bezel. I'm assuming this kit would work with my bezel.

Has anyone used this conversion kit on my style bezel before? Been saving my pennies hoping to upgrade or convert at some point. Was it tough to assemble?
