TBI 5.7 Woes
Having issues with the TBI 5.7 in my Suburban. Had a part-throttle ping, replaced the EGR solenoid and double checked that base timing was at 0°. Ping went away for about 100 miles or so (or maybe I just didn’t notice it), then came back. Thought it could have been poor gas, so I filled up with ½ tank of 91 octane instead of 87 to see if it would cure it. It did...I think. Tank ran out, went back to 87 octane, ping came back. Ran that tank out, filled back up with 91. No issues except yesterday at a stop light, the truck was idling, then stumbled slightly. It recovered quickly, but was sort of odd and seemed to come out of nowhere.
I jumped in today to head off to work, SES light came on. Truck seemed “sluggish” (could have just been in my head - the thing is on 35’s with 3.73s so it’s not exactly a powerhouse anyway). Stopped for coffee, shut truck off. Came out, started truck back up, SES light was off. Drove another mile (or so) SES light came back on. Haven’t pulled a code or anything yet. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas? |

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
Sounds like it could be the ESC module. If it isn't pulling/giving timing correctly, it would cause the truck to run like doo doo. If you were able to pull a code, that would give you somewhere to look. Was the EGR clean?

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
I'll pull the code(s) tonight. EGR looked good and passed the vacuum test.

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
Weird. Just went out to pull the codes and got nothing. Just kept flashing "12" over and over.

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
Oh well, I'm gonna try to go get it smogged. I'll just keep an eye on it.

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
12 code is normal, If there were any codes it would start with 12 , flash any other codes , end with 12 code

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
I chased a slight ping on part throttle accelerations for a while..Screwed around with fuel pressure, timing, colder plugs..Etc. I found that if I use at least 89 octane it never pings , ever.

Re: TBI 5.7 Woes
I would run a large cup of water through it.Get it running and up to temperature then bring up the rpm to 3500 and slowly trickle the water into the TBI.
It will remove any carbon hotpots on the pistons and flush the egr passages. It is poor mans seas foam. |
