Opening a can of worms!

I just found out yesterday that my engine's day are numbered. I am going to drive it until it quits, but I need to get a new engine for it. So what are some ideas for crate motors, factory rebuilt, Lt1 swaps, etc.

I need to keep it at or below 2k if I can. Depends on how long my current engine lasts! If I can get it to last until my wife finishes school next year I can spend more. Right now I would be hard pressed to spend a grand! I am just doing some research right now.

in that case i'd suggest carquest or autzone for a rebuilt longblock. i know that carquest uses RECON rebuilds i've known a number of people that have those engines without a failure

GM Mr. Goodwrench crate motor...cheap,new,warranty.

I 2nd the GM crate motor...Right now you can get a plain jane 260hp 330ft/lbs 350ci long block for $1,200 with a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty. Can't hardly beat that for the money.

My buddy just put in a GM crate in his '66 3/4 ton 4wd. It is a great deal for the price. He got it through the dealership so I don't think he even had to pay freight.

I have the 300hp(Old pre vortec head) chevy crate
engine, that has been a good engine for the 10
years it has been in my burban. The currnet one
is the same short block but with vortec heads 330
hp for just over 2K

Goodwrench 350 crate. The numbers will add up FAAAASSST if you go for a shortblock and put some heads and stuff on it! The goodwench is a good reliable engine plus it has a nice warranty!

goodwrench motors are ok but the 3year/36thousand mile warrenty is only for vehicles originally equipped with a 350 if the 350 isn't the original motor by the vin# then the warrenty is 12months/12thousand miles

if money is an issue put a junkyard one in til ya can do it right rather than have a good one then wanna replace it with a better one later thats the cheap fix for now then next year the wife lets ya build what ya want

The problem with mine is a flat lobe on the cam, so for now I will drive it while I save for the fix!

Buy a core and build your own, shop wisely and that way you know what you got.

Krue, replace the cam right away!!! A new cam and lifter set isn't that expensive, and you will buy a lot of extra time to save for a better motor!! Get a good manual, and one weekend, and you will have er' done!! Maybe even get a performance grind, just for kicks. Probable need a new timing chain, and gears anyway, while your in there. You can handle it, buddy!!

I just moved into a new house. Two weeks before the scheduled move day my cam went flat. I REALLY want to do a new engine for the truck but just don't have the time/money at this point in my busy life.

I don't remember the exact price any more (you move and then I'll ask you what you spent on an item 3 weeks ago) but it was worth it to me.

I had my engine rebuilder friend tell me what to get. Summit shipped it to my door. I installed it in less than 6 hours. The truck lived on to move my stuff. I also bought myself some time to decide on what I want to do. 350? 383? Vortec heads? Narley cam? Screw the whole small block thing and wedge in a 454? Yeah - its a can of worms.

For $4900, u can't go wrong with wiring harness, and multi-port F.I.

I had the this one in my '85 LWB ½ton and always wished I had spent the extra money on the F.I. just for the easy starting and throttle response:

Where did that warranty information come from? It's not exactly correct. Either that or scoggins-dickey have a different warranty plan, i'm not sure.

Gm will warrenty that engine for 3yr or 50k which ever comes first according to Scoggin-Dickey. This is for thier GM Goodwrench crate engines. It doesnt matter who installed it, dealer/independent or over the counter. In the event of a problem (no matter who installed it) you take it to a Authorized GM dealer.

Aren't those 86-up engines?
In that case a pre 86 intake manifold wont fit. ( I think flywheels are different too but not positive)
Just something to keep in mind.

reco motors are good. that is the company summit racing uses to build their brand engines. if you just get a cam kit it will only cost you about $100 and a weekend. it will go quick. it will also prolong the life of your motor so you can save more than a couple grand to get a turn key crate motor. that is the only way to make the best of gm crate motors, if you want the advertised horsepower ratings.
