Power steering in 71 gmc

Did they come as an Option?

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...009%7CL3*15715

Would this be a good buy for me to put in the truck and how exactly do you install it ?

I'd like to have P-S in this Truck to make it easy as everyone would

Opinions please

Yes some trucks did come with power steering, but the pump in your link is not the standred one used with a sbc or the inline six. What engine do you have in your truck?

Re: Power steering in 71 gmc

That's good news if you want to add any type of component to your truck since that is the world's most popular engine. A power steering pump for your truck will run around $40-$50 from any parts house, but you also need to have a power steering rack and pinion. That is the pricey part. The good news is the components that will fit your truck were used up through the 90's which makes them dime a dozen. I will post a link of the exact pump for your truck once I get to my laptop. I hope this helps.

Re: Power steering in 71 gmc

A junkyard would be a good place to get a power steering gear box for less than a hundred buck. I literally did my disc brake conversion on my 67 for less than 150 and I converted to power steering at the same time, my biggest issue was finding a cheap power steering bracket for my pump since I had headers.

Re: Power steering in 71 gmc

Four bolts on the frame, two on the steering shaft and the lines on the box, I was able to do it with my fender on but I don't remember if I had to take my inner fenderwell out. But it isn't hard at all really. It just time consuming cause you have to turn the wheel a Lil to get to the two bolts on the shaft.

Re: Power steering in 71 gmc

Crap I forgot one thing that can be a bit challenging and that is the pitman arm, might take a couple hits from a bfh to get it off the drag link, sorry for the brain cart
