Wonderful tool! Worth every penny!

I did a search in the TOOL section and really didn't find any useful info about this really cool tool. I bought one today and it works really well.

It's called a needle scaler. It's an air tool that uses hardened steel rods (12 of them on the mini version I bought) to chip away at scaled rust, hardened undercoating and caked on "whatever". It has certain uses, so it's not for everything and won't replace your sander or grinder. For instance, you would not use it to remove paint from a body panel. I find it useful to get into corners where disc grinders and wire wheels can't reach. Plus, it chips stuff off, instead of gumming up your grinding wheel or sandpaper.

I love it. Here are some before and after pics of my first time results. Sorry that one of the before pics is out of focus.

Man, that made me shudder! I got plenty of time behind those when I rode towboats on the river back in the 70's, chip, prime, paint, chip, prime, paint......

Those work great. A few years ago I used one on a really rusty junk 5.3 engine that I had picked up to use as a mock up motor. It took me about 20 minutes to have all the rust and scale off the block.

I never thought of using it to remove old undercoating. I'll have to give it a try.

That was my thought EXACTLY when I seen this. When I was a little younger and worked on the boats I logged many hours on one of these also. Even wore a hole in some steel toe boots one time because I tried to hide and had it propped up on my steel toe so it would still have the sound so I could catch a little shut eye. After a while this thing did some good damage on the steel toe being there in one spot for so long.

You can use it to anneal a mig weld on cro-mo tubing also.

Sorry, my terms were mixed up..I had meant to say you can use it to peen a weld on cast iron to help relieve stress as the material cools down.
Have seen it used when mig welding trusses on axles where they tie into the pumpkin, if you cant tig it for whatever reason.

I am not a professional welder so do not hold me liable for any damage that may occur from not using the best method of welding for your material.

One of the best tools I own. I used it on my entire Jeep frame and front axle knuckles (swapped in a high pinion d30 from a XJ cherokee). My Dad used it on his step side project, and my brother used it on his pickup. Great tool and cheap! Needle scale, wire wheel, wipe, prime, paint.

Don't forget ear protection. They get annoying after a while and of course safety glasses.

Regular price at HF in my area is $29 + change. I used a 20% off coupon so it was just under $26 including tax. They have a larger version but I think it'd only be useful for bigger jobs. Replacement rods (needles) run about $5 a set but the originals should last a long time.

They are great tools! I used them when I was working with a government contractor on humvees and trailors and 7-tons. They are very useful and from my experience with them, the needles will last a long time.

I bet you didn't watch the video. I saw the video and got so excited that I went outside and tried mine out in the rain (well a drizzle maybe) just to see if it worked as well. Trust me on this one.

gonna make a trip to HF monday ( having a labor day sale ) and im a cheap a@*, hoping can use this thing to clean underside of cab and frame while truck is assembled( cuase i aint taken it apart lol ).
