Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 style
The only "below eyeline" schematic I found in the assembly manual was on page 933 and it is the 1971 style, which has a much different mounting tripod. Where did GM spell out the holes are located? I think RH and LH were similarly located on the door but want to make sure. On my K10 the top holes appear roughly equal side-to-side and in-line with the vent window screws. Also, of the two sets I have one has a longer arm - wonder if the longer arm was used for the RH side mirror?

Didn't think you owned an assembly manual. :-)
Might be able to look about later and see. IIRC the mirrors are not handed though. Just looked up the locations for Jocko on his DF2 mirrors and they are staggered 2".

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
LOL! I can see why you might think that. Interesting, the manual shows identical mount placement for the 71 style BE mirrors - the DF2s were staggered and this has me questioning the placement for the D29s in 72. Since the location of the D29s on my K10 is similar side to side, I was wondering if the longer of the two 90 degree elbows went on the RH side - in effect moving the mirror head rearward while tripod hole placement remains same side-to-side. The doors on my K10 were replaced so I'm not sure if the mirror location is reliable but it seems in-line with pics I've seen. Why not in manual though?

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
Like I said I will look some more for answers. The service manual is not showing handed parts but then this is the 79 edition for service replacement parts. The longer arm sounds like a replacement part changed out sometime in the past.
The assembly manual is just a collection of drawings and by no means all inclusive or even "as built" correct. Anything you find there is a good reference but it must be verified per individual year and assembly plant.

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
Tim - definitely could be production differences with the mirror manufacturer but I may use the longer arm on the RH for the K20 and see how it goes. This borrowed pic shows a distance that is more or less the same on my LH door but is slightly greater and as a consequence in-line with the vent window screw on my RH door. The anterior of the two lower screws is 6" from the anterior margin of the LH door skin.

That would be the 69-71 Below Eyelines in that illustration. I have a set of '72 doors with them, but I'd have to move a lot of things to get to them. Hopefully someone else can help. If not,I'll measure mine.

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
Is there anyone with a '72 that has the Below Eyeline mirrors? All Highlanders had them. Please don't make me have to go out there and dig through that junk out in my building...please?
If no response,I'll get the measurements tomorrow.

I measured the mirror on the right side of my 72 GMC Super Custom and it is in exactly in the same position as on the left. The picture posted above is mine from another post. I hope this helps.

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
Deadhead,
I have a '72 C-10 with D29 (painted) Below eye-line type mirrors on the SPID and the truck. In your post #5, you have 8.25" listed for the top mounting screw. I went out and measured mine....both driver and passenger side were mounted 8.5" aft of the door edge, on that same upper facet shown in your pic. IMO either would be fine, as the articulation of the mirror head (horizontally and vertically) would be able to compensate for that .25" either way. So if you assemble the tri-pod, you should be able to just measure and mount that top position, make sure the legs are not cock-eyed, and mark/mount them. IOW, if the top mount is correct, you can't really go wrong on the rest of them. On another note, I just had my D29's powdercoated, and was looking for a way to seal the mounting holes, both in the pod legs and the door itself. I found some small, thin nylon washers that fit the screws perfectly. I think I got them at Ace Hardware, or Lowes....can't remember now. I know I got the bigger nylon washers for the mirror head at Lowes. Anyway, due to those small nylon washers, there is NO metal to metal contact between my mirror mounts and my doors. That may or may not be of concern to you. Hope it helps, and keeps Tim from having to go on an adventure!

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
Thanks guys! That's all I need - should have these mounted on the K20 later in the week. Great idea about the nylon washers - I just rebuilt my set of mirrors and know exactly where to go for the washers. As an aside, I found some stainless acorn nuts but these weren't an exact match but close enough. True Value had chrome acorn nuts that were a great match but didn't fit well on the threads - maybe the chrome was too thick. Appreciate the help!

a question Pete - where did you find the stainless acorn nuts?
thanks

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
Dave I found these in the nuts/bolts section at a True Value hardware. The ends are more rounded than pointed like the originals but otherwise work. True Value also had chrome acorn nuts that were a near perfect match - trouble is they wouldn't thread well as if the chrome had thickened the threads. Had the chrome nuts fit better I'd have used them.

I wound up with the same ones you have. The "rounded" acorn nut. And they are a bit larger as well. I found mine at a marine supply store. They are a metric M10 nut, and they thread onto the support arm perfectly. I had originally thought the support arms were metric for that reason. But SS Time corrected me on that.....support arms are SAE, but the thread count is NOT "standard". It just so happens that the metric nuts I found work.

In the thread I posted, SS Tim provides the spec.
Acorns are a 20 thread pitch count, not the more typical 16 or 24.

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
I pulled mine straight from the tray of 3/8 x 16 SS nuts and they fit fine. I'm nearly certain mine were 16 thread and these are OEM elbows all the way. I'll double check when I run back to the hardware store cause I've been wrong before. Dave - take the 90 degree elbow with you to check your new nuts....

Re: Below Eyeline Mirror Install for 72 - can't locate in assembly manual - only 71 s
sorry, been outta coms for a few days! I'm not certain the factory was "that" careful with mounting. Measured mine today - all 3 holes on the passenger side and the upper hole on the driver's side match the photo above (great reference, and this is what I'd use if drilling NEW holes) - but my lower driver's side holes are 1/8-1/4" closer to the door edge than depicted (i.e. 5+5/8" and 12+3/4"). These are original highlander bem mounts, so I'm not gonna mess with em. Bottom line Pete - I'd go with what is listed in post #5 on both sides and call it a day.
