1987 fuel gage issue.

The PO swapped the tbi 305 with a carberated 383 (good choice). He installed a different tank and sending unit. I cannot for the life of me get the fuel gage to come off 3 o'clock. Ground is good at the sending unit. Where else should I look? I'm considering running wires direct to the gage to rule out the printed circuit on the back of the cluster. Which pin does what?

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

Just a note: the factory wire harness to the motor is gone. The wire to the sender is pink, and the ground to the sender is to the frame. All other gauges work fine. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

a fuel gauge stuck at 3 is caused by a break in the sender wire (pink). this happened to my truck last year

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

Tore into my tank tonight. Found the wire to the fuel sender (black conector at the top) was broke. Hooked up good, but no connection. Replaced the fuel sender and wires...... Yatzee!!!! Not just to figure out a way to keep it from sloshing when I exellerate and stop. One step closer to a perfict truck. Body will be next

Do you mean "the fuel gauge bouncing around like crazy"?

As it back and forth from 1/2 to Full so you can never tell how much gas you have?

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

Sloshing could be the cluster ground splice in the harness. Look for posts by Motornut for pictures of what you need to find.

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

At an idle it holds still at half a tank. When I take off it goes up. When I brake it goes down. When I fill it. It reads over full. Roughly 1:30- 2:00

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

What's the best way to get the gage cluster out. I took out every screw I could find. The sucker wouldn't budge. Are there bolts under the dash?

Re: 1987 fuel gage issue.

bolts around the outside white shell
clip on the speedo and the wire plug
and watch out the upper right socket may have a black fiber optic thing off it
and you have to pull out from behind the metal part
I've even tugged the metal out a touch to make it easer

sure thing make sure the paths are holding down to the mylar/plastic
I used some crazy glue on mine
I switched from idiots to tach/gauges,repinned some of the harness plug to make it work
I actually had to add another seperate ground wire to (the ebrake bus) just for the fuel gauge as it was not there
before i did this swap i bounced like .....
