Parking Meter Restore ?
Anyone ever restore a parking meter? I picked one up at an auction just the other day. Made by "Duncan" ? Spur of the moment bid, thought it would be cool to re-do one and put it in the shop. No key or mounting pole with it. Any ideas on how to get it open ?

Re: Parking Meter Restore ?
A Lock Smith would definitely be the way to go. A few years back there was a member here selling Parking Meters and he had them re-keyed as part of the deal. I bought one as seen below, there’s not that much to them. I think I paid $45 with shipping and re-keyed.

Re: Parking Meter Restore ?
Took the parking meter to our one and only locksmith in town and he said he could open it and change the cam lock for a $25 fee. Left it there, said he would call when ready to pick up. After I get a new lock installed will start looking on line for repair and restore parts for it. Seems most everything is available on Ebay to restore it. Lens, decals, information plates, etc. Should make a nice little project.

Re: Parking Meter Restore ?
Hey Randy, yeah, should be nice little project when it returns from the locksmith. Hope to get a call from them today, if not, will check with them when it will be done. As I mentioned, seems anything needed for it is available on Ebay. Plan on mounting it to a pole and set it outside the shop.

Re: Parking Meter Restore ?
Checked on the parking meter yesterday and the locksmith had one lock changed but there are two locks, one on each side. The one he changed allows access to the coin cup only. Need the other one changed which allows access to the mechanisim inside. Said he would key both locks to same key.
jondancer, look on Ebay and you can find most anything you need to re-store a parking meter. What mfg. and model do you have? Mine is a Duncan Model 60. When I get inside the mechanical end I hope it is all pretty straight forward for a rebuild. Also when I get it back will re-cycle one of the coins thru it and see if the mechanicals still work, I hope. Had 1 nickel and 6 pennys (one a 1940 wheat cent) in the coin cup. Guess this won't cost as much as I thought.

Re: Parking Meter Restore ?
Glad this thread is here!
Just might give me a nudge to get my own project underway again! I've got a POM model K and found the above to be true with the re-key. At the time, I was told if we drilled into the chamber and was able to trip the lock from inside, it would be an easy matter to change the lock. Drilling wouldn't have bothered me as this is used for shop art (very heavy shop art!!) but the project lost steam and it's been below a bench for a couple years. Subscribed! . |
