Fuel Pump, stock vs. HP ?
I noticed today that my fuel pump is leaking, so it's time for a new pump. Is there any benifit to a high performance pump or should I just go to NAPA and get a stock replacement? The motor is stock, just intake and carb.

Re: Fuel Pump, stock vs. HP ?
In your case, I would just use a stock replacement pump. Unless you have tons of horse power and an 850 or larger CFM carb, a stock pump will do just fine. The carb only needs around 5 - 6 psi of fuel pressure to function correctly.

Not to hijack the thread, but before he does this, is it a good idea to go for an electric fuel pump or stick with mechanical? I heard an electric pump saves about 3 horsepower.

Re: Fuel Pump, stock vs. HP ?
the originals last 40-50 years on a regular basis
electric for a carb engine is a great way to manufacture service problems where none existed

I am going to try to get a GM service replacement, I think Classic Industries has them. It's hard to ignore 40 - 50 years of service!

Re: Fuel Pump, stock vs. HP ?
cdowns,
You are probably on to something there and the main reason I haven't bought one....that and wiring is something I have little experience with. I bought a new mechanical fuel pump at Advanced Auto but I have not put it on. My truck still has the original it came with. Should I swap it out? |
