New Truck... knock in the front end

Usually I am in the 60-66 section of these boards however I found a deal on a truck today I couldnt pass up. The only thing that I could find wrong is the fact that there is a knocking in the front a little bit. I think I remember something about this being a common problem so looking to you guys before tearing into it.

Re: New Truck... knock in the front end

Check the "Intermediate Steering Shaft' first, Its sounds like a loose shock or ball joint when bad. The sound and clunk resonate up through the steering shaft into the wheel. Don't let anyone tell you that repacking it with grease will fix it, Replace it.

Re: New Truck... knock in the front end

Redistributing the grease in the ISS is a very effective FREE...(Though temporary) solution to this.

Separate the Lower & Intermediate steering shafts (Right under the Brake booster/master cylinder). Stroke the ISS in & out several times.....This will redistribute the grease. I do mine once a year.

Pumping grease into it doesn't do much good.

Re: New Truck... knock in the front end

Ok so I got the part in. I used the part number I got from the dealer using my vin. Part number 89023358.

However I think they sent the wrong one unless I am missing something.

Here is the old one in the truck:

New one:

The ends at the u-joint are completely different. Am I missing something here?

The pic of the part on your truck is the Lower Steering shaft.
The Intermediate Steering shaft connects too the Column......(Inside the truck)
