longish trip

okay, tomorrow I am going to visit my grandparents, who want to see my new truck and I was wondering if this would be a safe thing to do with my truck. I have a 465 trans and 4.10 gears going about 50 miles via freeway. I do plan to stop and check fluid levels a few times on the way up to see how its all doing. but do you guys think i will be fine on this trip? I have put a few hundred miles on the truck already without problems other than burning a little bit of oil. thanks for the help!

Re: longish trip

if it stops good and drives good, and the tires are good ,I don't see why you would have any problems . go see the old folks and have fun....

Re: longish trip

Alright, I have one tire that worries me a little but its held up so far
but if it doesn't make me the trip, I have a spare that will get me to the nearest tire shop and I will be carrying extra cash just in case

Re: longish trip

never start out with bad tires if you can get another one I would, not worth getting hurt, if you do go in it just drive a little slower and be careful .

SM 465 and that rear end, you certainly won't be breaking any speed records. Have fun and enjoy your truck.

Re: longish trip

As long as the truck is mechanically sound and not an accident looking for a place to happen, you'll be fine. Fifty miles is nothing. It's been many years, but I did about a 3500 mile round trip in winter with my K20 with auto trans and 4.10 gears. Burned up a lot of dinosaur juice but had no issues. Enjoy your visit!

Re: longish trip

As long as it steers and stops well I don't see any reason not to try it. That will be a fun trip for you and possibly for them as well. Jim

Wink Re: longish trip

The real question here is how safe is the truck. Not just for your safety but for anyone who is close to u if the tire blows out.

Also u need to ask yourself, if something does happen can I fix it myself are is it going to cost me x amount of $$$$$$ to have fixed.
I have fixed my truck several times on the side of I-85. It's not fun when those 18 wheeliers blow by u about 2 feet away and your under the hood.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: longish trip

Jump in and go...

I drive my old '72 on 300+ mile round trips all the time to visit my parents. No need to stop to check fluids or anything...

Re: longish trip

Listen to these guys. If you have a good spare, change it now. I learned my lesson about messing with iffy tires without anyone getting hurt but was damned lucky...

Re: longish trip

As a lot of you guys know that know me, I build late model wrecks and I would rate the causes for the wrecks that I see as 1 Drunks. 2I would call it unsafe vehicle systems. Things we would not DREAM of riding in if someone was just pushing across the parking lot, a lot of people that don't know any better[weather they are idiots or just stupid or unaware of how a car works]. 3 Distracted driving like teeny bopers talking or texting on their Iphones. So please stay safe,I do enjoy seeing and buying and building wrecks have loved it for a long time. I just don't want to build your car/truck, no offense. Jim

Re: longish trip

OUCH!

Sorry to hear you ran into a problem. Was it your wheel bearings?

Almost lost my front drivers side to a wheel bearing failure many years ago. Only thing keeping it on was the spindel nut and washer.

Re: longish trip

well, I went up there and got there fine and talked for a few hours blah blah, and I was about 2 miles away from home: boom all of a sudden I am staring at the ground as my front tire flies off and impales the door of a parked audi. so long story short it did not go smoothly like I had hoped. but all in all everyone is home safe now and my insurance is about to skyrocket. my truck is home now and needs a little work, but will be fine again soon

Re: longish trip

nope, somehow managed to walk all the lugs off and broke the final one. which really confuses me because i triple checked these things after redoing the brakes, which I get to redo again. I also get to pull the hubs off to see if my spindles got damaged at all
