Smile Found my build sheet....excellent find!!

Well, I doing a little cleaning the truck on the weekend including some rust-checking, etc and low and behold...tucked in behind the original gas tank cardboard cover was the original factory build sheet.
I had briefly looked for it before directly behind the seat in the upholstery backing but never saw anything so just assumed it was missing and gone.
Needless to say....I was happy camper to see it tucked in that gas tank area!!
The truck itself is a very original and fairly well optioned California truck ('72- Med Blue/White) and finding the build sheet is a great adder to the history of it for me.
I'm not 100% familiar with these sheets but it looks like its birthday was on April 19th, 1972.
It was delivered and sold new at John Geer Chevrolet in Sacramento. The cool side to that is that when I got the truck it still had the original cast metal 'John Geer Chevrolet' licence bracket on it...glad I kept it!!
all Good

Was your truck sold at Fred Geer? (or?)
Either way, check out ebay every so often...I've seen the older series dealership plates on there from time to time.

My truck was custom ordered at the dealership in Denver after my friend got back from Viet Nam. He used his 69 Z28 (was stored when he was gone) as a trade in. He gave me all the paper work documenting this. I'll check ebay now and then. Thanks

Would that be Luby Chevrolet? My truck was originally sold there and I've been looking for a Luby fender sticker.

Smile Re: Found my build sheet....excellent find!!

I appreciate the comments guys.
Here is something else I was wondering about that someone might have some input on:
I am assuming the occasional firewall chalkmarks were put on by the line/assembly inspector....any truth to this or?
So when I looked at mine I noticed the chalk mark on the drivers side definitely looked like an 'A' with possible a 'D' swooshed through it. The inspectors 'trademark' I assume.
I was wondering if that would have any connection to the hand written black letter mark lettering put on the build sheet....which also contains an 'A' but maybe a 'U' or ??
I would like to have found the history on the guys who did the final inspections on these things.
Anyone else have similar markings? Are you happy with the final inspection? (....I was!!)
I've attached a couple of pics on this including a quick pic of the SPID which matches up well to the build sheet.

I've worked with GM for 35 years now in Engineering and Assembly across 12 -15 different GM plants.

Those look like straight up "graffiti" to me, having no formal purpose. Guys would sometimes inscribe their initials, lunch tip or bookie calculations or love notes to cute girls in the Trim shop farther downstream. In the Pontiac world there is a "Linda" who wrote her name on the back of a number of gloveboxes across several model years.

Most of the official markings, done in tire crayon (as opposed to "chalk") are either build sequence numbers or a "heads up" of option content.

Inspectors would record their individual marks on the paper inspection ticket, using coded hole punches (hearts, moons, clovers, etc) rather than on the vehicle itself. Occasionally ink stamps would be used to apply a note to the firewall such as "Test Passed - Line 1 Electrical" or similar verbiage. Notes or initials on the build sheet are meant to confirm that they have reviewed the document and agree it goes with the vehicle currently in front of them. It's easy to lose track of what you are doing, should you be interrupted, after you've done it three or four hundred times in a day.

Keith, again great info Thanks!
Coley, I have been documenting those "painters marks" for a couple years now. I have only found them on Freemont trucks. Here are some trucks that were painted by the same guys that painted your truck. Two guys painted the cab, one on the right and one on the left.

Coley, Do you have the protect o plate for your truck? How about the engine, is it original to the truck?

...geez, how cool is that!! I'd love to meet this guy who put his signature on these but that was...what, 40+ years ago...hopefully he would still be around!
The Protecto-Plate....unfortunately no, but I think the guy who sold (or flipped/forwarded) the truck to me from the original aging owner might have hung on to it for his own collection. I might touch base with him again to see if he will send it to me.
The engine...yep, it is the original (350) engine. It was rebuilt at some point in either the late 80's or early 90's. It runs out really, really nicely. Its not a HiPo/racing engine and its getting to the point where its developed a few standard sbc oil leaks and kicks a little blue at start up...but....does it ever run nice.
I've got a fully rebuilt set of '041' heads for it and an Edelbrock performer manifold that I'm intending on putting on, possibly next season. I'm really hesitant to mess it with it tho' LOL....its such a good, reliable runner.

My Fremont built 72 C10 has the same mark as picture number 3
