Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

On a 70, just as the post title implies I was preparing to start on the rockers and cab work on one of my 70 trucks and after I removed the door and started to beat around on the outer rocker just to see where the stability is ,I noticed where the pinch weld is/was that I had three wire. One is for gas gauge. The yellow and white two together [I think] is for the dome lamp, That I did not even know I had. How or why would it have a dome lamp without door jamb switches in the door pillars? When I put it back together wouldn't I hook up some door switches and make [courtesy] lamp that work when the door open? Jim

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

The switches were only included with the CST trim level in 1970 or as option C80 according to info I have. The dome light should go on when the headlight is rotated fully clockwise (I think it's clockwise).

My 70 has a dome lamp, but no door switches. It only works when you rotate the headlight knob.

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

Hey guys,
First off I have to turn my headlight switch counter-clockwise all the way to turn on the dome light. You should feel it kind of snap into position.

I also have factory holes about midlevel on the rear of the door frame for dome light buttons.

The way the light is wired it just needs a ground(anywhere) to light the dome. When you open the door, the button is designed to ground the white wire and complete the circuit. The door buttons are tied into the ground(white) wire without breaking the original connection.

Mine(1967 C10) doesn't come with the door buttons originally, but it's pretty obvious some of them did, since it comes with the holes already. The Orange wire(which may have faded to yellow) is a power wire that goes uninterrupted to the dome light.

You should also have a hole on the passenger side door frame as well. You only need to run another ground wire over there to add another grounding button.

I bought a couple of buttons at cpa for about $5 each, iirc. I haven't installed them yet because it a pita to get to the hole on the driver's side with the gas tank installed. I'll get around to it when I replace my grommet for the gas fill tube in the near future.

Hope this helps,
Curt

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

My 72 cheyenne has the pin switches in the cab at the front near the hinges. Only higher trim level teucks had switches. All of the cabs i have looked at had a flat spot where the switch goes. The hole just has to be drilled and wire run. The pin switches and wire could be added to any truck. As stated above tou just need the wire for the ground. I believe i have seen the harness and switches at Classic Parts and LMC. I an sure ither vendors have them as well.

I agree. The factory installed switches were installed in the front door pillar between the hinges.

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

Yes, there is an indented place on both side where the door jamb switch would be if were installed. I did not inspect it closely enough to see if there is a center punch mark as there is on similar thing of this nature on newer trucks and cars from the General. Jim

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

Mid and upper level trucks had jamb switches and base trim didn't.If the truck came with stainless window trim it came with door jamb switches. The base trim trucks you need to twist the headlight switch to the left to get the light on,which you can do on the other trucks, too

67-70 C/10/20/30 and 71/72 Custom/10/20/30 = no jamb switch

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

Yes , it all makes sense, but i can't find a vendor that sells the switches!?! Isn't it amazing what would pass as optional only a few years ago! Anyone know a vendor? Seems like everyone would want this easy option. Erik

Tim, my wrecker is a Custom/30 with the windshield trim but has no door switches. Maybe the 1 ton had different rules?

I was told once that the first Mustang had over a 1000 options, and that if you ordered the base model it came with no rims.........or so my high school shop teacher told us

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

I just installed door switches on my 72 in the factory position. Here are a couple of pics. I picked the switches up at Autozone for about $5 each.

There were 70 options available for the 64 1/2 Mustang, and yes they came with "Wheels". Rims weren't available until sometime in the 1990's when rappers couldn't say "Wheels".

The term rim drives me crazy!

Rim
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An aluminum alloy wheel
The rim is the "outer edge of a wheel, holding the tire".[1] It makes up the outer circular design of the wheel on which the inside edge of the tire is mounted on vehicles such as automobiles.

Ok..............I feel better.

so you put tires around wheels on the rims? I don't think it has anything to do with rappers but more where your from, like some people say soda and others say pop. I say wash and my father who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks says warsh.

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

for my '68 I like just having a on/off manual switch on dash near drivers door - using ground (white) wire. that way I can work on truck interior, etc and not have to try to keep door jamb switch pushed in with tape, or whatever. if I really finish the truck, unless I sell it, will likely hook up door jamb switches.

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

A dome lamp bypass might be nice to have like the ones in the 99 and newer Chevy and GMC trucks where you can decide if you want to use them or turn them off such as in the case of an open door during a working time. Just anther one of those things to make you go huh?

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

I picked up a full wire harness for "courtesy" lights that go under the dash. I got them out of a newer truck with switches, wire, bulbs and all. I don't think I paid much if anything for it. Many times at the yard when you buy a lot of stuff they won't even charge you of the little stuff. I don't have them put in yet, because that will wait til I'm back in the states and retired.

Sorry for the dumb question here...but where do the wires for the switches pass through?

I have the courtesy light kit sitting on my shelf but was reluctant to start drilling holes without asking first!

Re: Dome lamp without door jamb switches?

Measure the size of the threaded portion on the switches, use a sharp punch to make a small dimple to ensure the hole stays where you want it. You may even drill a small pilot hole too. To ensure that you have the right sized hole, drill a hole in a scrap piece of sheet metal and check for proper fit. To route the wire, go up under the dash on the kick panels select a location so that the wire won't interfere with the vent door operation. Drill a hole sized to allow the two wires to go through and be secured with a rubber grommet. After all that, you just need to feed the wire through the hole and fish it through the hole in the door jamb. A technique to use is to feed a length of small wire throgh the jamb hole (I like a single strand of phone wire for this) and tie it to the end of the harness wire, and then just carefully pull it through the jamb hole, hook up your switch, screw it in, take out the slack (gently, not too tight), mount your courtesy lights (if it applys), and hook the harness up to the fuse box.
For the dome light to work on these switch, you'd have to hook the lead wire to this circuit (if I remember right, it's the orange and white one that runs down under the sill plate on the drivers side)
I know this is kinda wordy but that's it

The trick we used to thread the wire through, was to first insert a length of string in the hole then blow the string through with compressed air. Attach one end of your wire to the string and pull the string back through.
