torque converter

Hi everyone, im restoring a 1969 c10 long bed. It has a fresh rebuilt 350 small block and a turbo 350 transmission. I want to know what brand and type of torque converter would be best for this tranny and motor?? My uncle has a 65 chevy c10 and it has a new torque converter and it has a quick takeoff. So i would like torque coverter recommendations. Thanks for any info.

Re: torque converter

Ok i just called the previous owner and he said the rearend is a stock 70 10bolt and it has an old cam called a crower torque master. Any info on a compatable cam would be appreciated thanks

Re: torque converter

you need to figure out what size gears are in the rear end, but in general i would recommend a B/M Holeshot with a 2100 RPM stall,

Also you need to look more into how your engine is set up and carb, timing, ect ect, sometimes a quick take off is not all about a stall converter

Re: torque converter

Agreed on the Holeshot. As I recall, the crower torque master liked 1800-5000 RPM range. This would be great if you have 3.73s or 3.42s

Now what kind of driving do you want to do with it? Do you want it to be a weekend cruiser, daily driver, raceday and show only?

I use a stock lockup converter in my 700R4 because I want fuel economy when I go on long trips/cruises. PLUS the low stall helps keep the engine from revving too much.

Re: torque converter

It is a daily driver now and i want to turn it more into a weekend cruiser as soon as i purchase another vehicle. I really dont want it show to where you cant even touch it. But i want it to look nice and have some nice power and kick when you hit the gas

Re: torque converter

is your cam lumpy at all or nice and smooth? If there is any lump you may want a 2500 RPM stall.... If you have a higher stall, it's like revving the engine a little higher and dumping the clutch. If you have 900-1000 RPM stall it is like taking off from normal rev and with a lumpy cam you may feel it. A higher stall is like revving the engine to a higher (flash) RPM and letting the clutch go.

Call or bring the truck to a tranny shop and see what they say.

Re: torque converter

Ok you said the Holeshot would be great if i had a 3.73 or a 3.42. Im new to this stuff so im not sure what that is. Is it rearend gear ratio? And if it is i have a stock 70 ten bolt rearend if that helps. Does a stock 70 ten bolt come with a standard set of gears in it?

go outside and clean your rear end real good go over it with a wire brush and some solvent and try to look for different numbers, there are guys on here that can help you convert them over and maybe you will see a gear ratio on the tubes or cover somewhere

Re: torque converter

I'd try the holeshot. Its really not that much stall. You don't want to over stall the trans if you don't have the motor and or gears to back it up.

Re: torque converter

Ok B&M holeshot2000 is what im going to order. A couple more questions though. Earlier in this thread someone asked if my cam was lopey or smooth and i said lopey. But a mechanic i talked to said it was smooth. So is the holeshot still a good choice?

Re: torque converter

yes, i had a 72 C-10 years ago with a 300HP crate engine nice smooth idle , a little better than stock with a turbo400 tranny and 3.08 rear end gears, the holeshot worked great for me , you will be fine

Re: torque converter

Holeshot is a tough converter too. They work hard. Good Choice.
