Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
So This past weekend cruising around I found and bought 5.9L cummins and trans combo..... So which leads me to my next question.... Do I keep my very unique Turbocharged 250 with a blow through setup, or do I sell it and swap in this 5.9L Cummins? Thoughts, comments, opinions welcome!

I love the six, so that's what I voted for. I guess the Cummins would be cool as well. Just a whole lot of work, and the six is different enough to be cool on its own.

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
which 5.9 cummins did you get?
What kind of mileage do you get with your current engine? Do you care about mileage? you can definatly make some big power with a cummins....but you better beef up your drivetrain. I'm getting about 17.5 mpg out of my 7000lb lifted 4x4 crew cab on 35s. I'm hoping to get 20 mpg by the time I'm done tinkering with it. |

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
I get 12mpg right now with the turbo six but should have no problem pulling 20 after some more tweaking with the carb some more. I would be running the oem transmission for the cummins, and the rearend in the truck is 12bolt with 3.07 gears eaton posi with 600lb springs and moser axles and the current driveshaft is out of a 3/4 ton so the driveline is good to go. I'm not so concerned about the power of the cummins either... stock it puts out 325 hp and 610ft lbs torque... and with the gearing I should easily pull 20+ in it with an egr delete, chip it for economy, propane injection, and 5" Mandrel bent exhaust

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. Towing points towards the Cummins ISB. Cool factor? The nod goes toward the turbo.

There is nothing like the sound of a turbo diesel. I vote 5.9.

I think the 5.9L would be cool. You do know how loud that puppy is going to be (assuming you go with a straight through exhaust)?

I voted for the six because it's different. There's a lot of hot rod Cummins

To me, I'd say the cummins. That thing would be a blast with minimal mods! They aren't too bad stock. Tuned properly and you's be over 20mpg.

You didn't get to me. I see where you're coming from. He needs to build another truck so he'll have both.

Winner winner chicken dinner!
I think your turbo I-6 is the coolest thing, so my vote is for keeping the Chevy motor in the Chevy truck...if you decide to just have one truck.

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
I haven't voted, I can't make my mind up both setups are great!! You know just saying if you did go with the diesel it would make a great set of vehicles to find a first gen Chevy II or a Vega with that turbo 6 under the hood, that would be something different and cool.

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
So, what would you do with the cummins if you do not put it in this truck? If you have no other project to put it in, you may have subconsciously already made up your mind. At least that's how it would have played out if it were me, lol

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
I'd stay with the turbo 250. It's different and beyond cool. I'm a diesel guy and I've owned a couple cummins 5.9 and they're bulletproof. If you wanted to do the swap it'd be an excellent choice engine wise. But personally I'd be more impressed by someone's truck with a turbo 250 over a cummins. Plus your going to add a wee bit o weight on the front end with that diesel. But it's your truck and there's not exactly a bad choice to be made. More power to ya either way.

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
I agree with the sentiment, "you see plenty of hotrodded cummins running around"..They're all over the place in my neck of the woods,so my vote is keep the turbo-d 250...but hey, I'm partial to inline sixes.
If you aboslutely have to have a diesel go find another project to drop it in.

Too many 6cyl Cummins around, not enough turbo inline sixes. Just my thoughts.

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
Keep the six. Cummins are cool and have there place...usually in the rear view of my duramax. A solid trans even to hold a stock cummins motor reliably for many miles will cost you 5k. There is too many of these trucks these days being total custom they lose there original touches. Keep your truck how it is. Just my honest opinion

Cummins! Diesel was the only fuel available after Superstorm Sandy here on Long Island!
I am looking for a truck, and would love to find a 67-72 Diesel, which are as rare as hens teeth. Bill |

Re: Keep my Turbocharged 250 or swap for a 5.9L cummins????
I think I needed to add a 3rd option of build another truck.... Like a 4x4 crew cab with a cummins.... I think problem solved I'll keep this truck the way it is...for now...
