another gear question

i got a 84 k10, I'm wanting to get new gears...i got quoted 500 or so to do both axles, i normally do all my work myself but have never messed with gears, should i do it myself? or just pay someone to do it? is it difficult?

hard? not really just tedious.. especially if you've never done them before...

500 doesn't seem that bad.. is that with parts? or just labour? If you're looking to keep the cost down some shops won't let you run used gears.. they need brand new ones.

Magnetic dial indicator, that's about it.

whats the difficulties of this job? really want to do it myself and don't wanna be stranded on the side of the road...

Scale of 1-10, probably a 6 or so. Its not bad, just get a good shop manual read and understand the steps, and you will be ready. Be prepared to set them up multiple times because the shim procedure is a pain. Its going to take a bunch of time.

Actually $500 in labor is not too bad. I prefer to get the axle out and do them on the bench, its much easier that way.

thanks crashz, i think ill do it myself, i would pull the axles but the last time i swapped out the whole axle it was a pain in the a** to get them back under there...the u-bolts where being a pain...im probably going to order the gears next week or so...i really appreciate the input guys

Dial indicator/mag base, 0-1 Micrometers, Press or Bearing heater.
Possibly a bearing puller, Torque wrench. Knowledge of proper bearing preload, Understanding backlash and how to make moves to correct it. Ability to read gear pattern and how to make adjustments.

If not installed correctly, you will have a noisy, short lived gear set.

Not saying you cannot do it, just giving you a heads up since you say your a newbie at this job.

jake, thanks for the detailed reply, i use dial indicators at work all the time, bearing press not so much but its a press...not much to it...heck if i could pull my truck in my shop at work i soooo would...haha...the usmc kinda frowns on using aviation tools for privately own vehicles
