testing the waters: trac-loc vs detroit
i would like to get a posi or locker in my truck, but it basically comes down to which is cheapest. i was thinking a detroit for my stock dana 60 would be too expensive. i dont really care about chirping the tires so thats not a problem. so its either a trac loc for my stock dana 60, or get an eaton with the detroit in it. what would prices on these run? any suggestions? TIA

this is kind of a stupid question, but how does a powr lok compare to a detroit? i know they are fundamentally different, but i would like to know from someone who has used one or the other (or both). thanks for the reply, i am not sure if i want to buy anything yet...

Well, I have a detroit locker.
Essentially it uses a spring, loaded component to lock the halves together. Once one wheel (the inside wheel) is forced to turn at a slower rate (torque increases) the corresponding half of the locked together component disengages, and turns freewheel. If the amount of torque is reduced then the process is reversed to lock the halves to gether again. There's a slight clunk sound every once in a while when the locker re-engages. Lockers are expensive new: upwards of $400-$500. Mine is contained within one of those old HO52 10 bolt corp axles with the eaton carrier.

I additional thing on lockers.......neither wheel can ever spin slower than the ring gear.......only faster. Lockers are nice for dragstrip use as they don't have friction material to wear out. But the noise on the street really bothers some people. I like eaton posi units, myself.

Well, first you have to find one. A detroit locker in good or serviceable shape would probably be a couple hundred $. The old 10 bolt axles are strong as hell, but not many of them are in good enough shape to justify a swap-in. That and you can't easily get parts for them. I had mine rebuild back when I didn't know anything, and here was the damage:
New Carrier bearings: $450 Detroit locker to replace spiders: $500 New gear set (3.90) to replace 4.10: $250 Labor: $250 ---------------- Total: $1450. The carrier bearings literally self-destruct once dirt or contaminants have gotten into the pumpkin. The spiders aren't made any more so you almost have to commit to a detroit locker unless you can find an old eaton posi unit (that are also not made for these axles any more). I think if I were you I'd invest in a good posi unit, and take care of that Dana 60. I'd NEVER go from a Dana 60 to an HO52/72.

thanks for the input, once again i didnt think this through, i guess it would be cheaper to just get a detroit for a dana 60 than find, buy, and rebuild an eaton. or just get a powerlock, which is about 1/5 the price of a detroit.
