custom? spare mount

saw this on Orlando CL.... pretty weird

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

not pretty but, sure beats crawling under truck to remove spare. plus, with many trailer hitch receivers that bolt to frame they do not leave room for carrying a spare in original location.

I only am aware of one receiver hitches that will prevent a spare tire from mounting behind the rearend. And it is a special one the mimics some aspects of a fifth wheel pivot. And I've only seen one of them. All others should leave ample room for the spare.

And I highly suggest to go to the cable type spare tire lifts. Get rid of that cradle that will ultimately get hung on a curb, a log or even thin air.

A little bit of ingenuity to make the cable lift work flawlessly for many years to come.

And you only have to get on the ground to get the center piece out of the wheel once it's on the ground.

you are wrong about the trailer hitch receivers that bolt on not leaving room for spare. just removed one by Reese on a '68 long bed. would have needed to run an adapter of some kind for spare. Have seen many others that create same problem. Idea about cable release sounds good - have any photos to post?

That was the Pull-Rite. I saw a few of them, but it's been a long time. Not sure if they make them any more.

Pull-Rite is correct, novel idea I almost bought to put behind my suburban, but the fuel tank was the first big issue.

They still show them on their web site.

Really? I did not check to see if they were still in business. The ones I saw had the underbed spares removed, and some even had the tailpipes relocated to allow the hitch to swing. And you could not back up without putting a pin in it!

Agreed! One of the best things I've done to the old trucks. If you go here, http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=600990, post #6, you can see what i did. The chain is long enough that you can slide the tire out with the crank tool, and undo it without your knees ever touching the ground!

Here are a few pictures.

If several of you are interested I can make some to sell. I'll have to figure out matl, hardware and time cost. And If you want the lift included I'll have to see what is available, new and used.

I designed this set up to work with the crank shaft for the lift is accessible through the passenger side wheel opening. I didn't see a great way to locate it at the rear near the license plate.

It's a great idea! Did you make any up for sale? I would be interested in one including the lift. Do you think cranking though a Stepside wheel opening work?

a truck with the dual side spares could make for a really short bed truck. move axle, etc forward and make into a wheel stander drag truck.

I saw a Furd with one mounted there once.It had a bedside door and looked factory.I think it was a camper model and put there for the old style cab over that hung past the bed.

Although I've only had 2 flat tires my entire time driving (both on Honda Accords) I will not be without a spare and I prefer one easy to get to.

Unfortunately I have, though it was no big deal to drop the spare and get her back on all four.
