shortening steering column
I have been searching since Thursday on how to shorten my column. I got everything loose and began to move it toward the dash. it might have gone an inch then nothing else. making sure I did the steps that were needing I crawled back under the dash and noticed that my neutral safety switch is hitting the firewall. I'm sure that someone on the forum has moved the nss into the engine compartment without having to modify the column at all. what did you guys do to shorten yours??

Re: shortening steering column
well fellas not a lot to update on this. I got the neutral safetry switch relocated to the engine bay with ease! the column is much shorter now over stock. I'm a big guy and I can finally extend my arms. my only problem has been getting the column back into the shaft!! my wife has been "helping" me but she's small and can't put a lot of force behind her. are there any tricks that you guys know of to make this easier? I will get pics up later today!

Pictures would help me. I can't quite figure out which shaft you mean, the main shaft that goes down through the column or the intermediate shaft that connects to the rag joint... Here are a couple of threads that might help. They are actually about installing a van a tilt column but they might have some tips you can use. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=133937 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=210459 LockDoc

You are talking about this joint then? It should slide together pretty easy if you spray a little penetrating oil on it. You have to make sure the bolt is not in it. It will not slide together if the bolt is in the clamp. Also, the slot in the lower piece (joint) has to be centered on the cutout in the upper shaft. You can also use a large screwdriver inserted into the slot in the joint to spread it apart a little bit, just go easy on it. You can see the slot in the second picture. LockDoc
