Hood pop?

Simple question for the know-it-all. What causes the hood to pop open when I pull the release?mine does not I have to reach inside the grill and push it up.then after closing it I have to push above the hinges to make it align with the other panels.is there a adjustment, oil,or other solution for this kind of problem?i did find a set of hood hinges to replace mine if someone can chime in it would be great.btw I will be at the Turlock swap meet today with my truck if someone is going they can show me what to do.thanks in advance.audie

Isn't it a spring?

Re: Hood pop?

I don't know about any adjustments I just think theres a spring in the latch area that pushes the hood up a few inches once you pull the lever

Re: Hood pop?

Here is what you possibly need, it's a heavy duty hood latch spring.
Here is how Frank describes this item.
It's a "Hood Popper". If our hood hinges, springs & alignment are'nt perfect...the hood just lies there when the latch is pulled.
This unit bolts right into an existing factory hole in the hood with no modifications. The biggest challenge was finding the right spring. After several different Camaro, Corvette & others that didn't work, I found and modified these. If the spring is too stiff or too long the hood won't close smoothly or coil binds solid. If the spring is too short or weak, it won't pop the hood. This one is just like Goldielocks---just right. When you pull the latch it pops the hood 3"-4", in one smooth action...even my cowl hood.
Notice the spring retainer. I think that is a nice touch, too.
The unit comes with: spring, hold down, retainer, bolt & washer. It does NOT come with the plate and pin!

Re: Hood pop?

I've heard of people using an old cylinder head valve spring in the latch mechanism.Kinda red neck but i think it'll work.

Re: Hood pop?

I made one from a solenoid return spring out of a gm starter. Tacked it to a large 1/2" washer... And it secures under the hood latch pin. Pops hood up a good 1 1/2" when released. Little extra weight on my hood now. Works good.

Re: Hood pop?

My hood didn't pop up until i spray lubed the hinge pivot points, Don't use WD-40 use a good lubricant like Tri-flow or similar. Now my hood comes right up. If you have to push down on the hood at the hinges that could ether be a sign of needing to be lubed or the hinges needing to be lowered on the firewall. Start with lubing them first before adding any mods that help but don't solve the real issue, once your sure the hinges are lubed and adjusted properly then move to the front latch and make sure its releasing when you pull the lever, also if the bumpers on the sides of the hood are adjusted too high it could affect the release in the center. if all this checks out then take a look into that spring that mounts to the latch plate.
