Anyone replaced their stock steering column with a Tilt with key and column automatic shifter from another truck????
I'm wondering is this can be put in my 66 truck

Re: 1966 tilt wheel

I pulled the pin on the shifter--shaved the lump, pulled the hazard switch--shaved it and can guess that if you pulled the rack, the switch etc you could shave the hump there too. Harness is an easy wire swap and in the FAQ there is a write up on the neutral safety switch relocation/modification.
Mine is in my build thread.

Re: 1966 tilt wheel

I had one in my 65 several years ago but changed it to a 72 tilt. Sorry I don't have any pictures though.

The column in my truck is tilt/telescopic! It is out of a 1966 Oldsmobile Tornado. unfortunately I was unable to find any pics of it. I will continue my search though.

Used a tilt column from a 91 suburban, also used wiring harness, fuse block, engine, trans, power steering, disc brake crossmember etc.

here is a picture:

click on the thumbnails to see more detail:
here is where we merged old and new brackets to allow use of the 91 column and wiring....

after shortening the column we redrilled the shaft and used nylon bolts to save the collapsible steering column...

keep scrolling to see more details....Kieth hope this helped !!!

Re: 1966 tilt wheel

thanks Keith.............time for pick and pull

I might look for a mid 70's truck column. about 1973-78.
I like the key in the column

Don't forget that the motor homes of the '70's used quite-adaptable/fittable columns, altho' they often used keyless columns. The one in my '66, keyless, came from a 73 or 74 motor home. It practically bolted right in. Re-wiring it was child's play.
Kieth's write-up and pics were fantastic, weren't they?

My 91 column has the key in the column, but there is no shift indicator. You can tell which gear it is in by feel. I do not miss the indicator.....

Re: 1966 tilt wheel

I think there are some posts here about using a column out of a van--you don't have to shorten. Can't find them at the moment, though.
