Re: Tired of cheap starters
I've never used that one, but I've had good luck with the Powermaster 9600. I used one on a 10:1 355 for 2 years, on a 12.2 : 1 383 for 4 years, and on the 9.5 : 1 383 in my '69 C-30 ramp truck since 2007. Its been a fantastic starter.

Re: Tired of cheap starters
I put a starter in the truck a few months ago. I bouht the HD Remy rebuild unit. Right out of the box the nose cone was machined wrong. I ended up putting the guts on my old nose. It almost left me stranded last week when the solenoid came loose. In fairness to that my motor shakes alot so fastners do come loose. Loctite and reinstall with no issues since.
If you kill starters alot it would be a good idea to make sure you have enough battery cable. I make mine out of 2/0 welder cable. The copper cross section is as big as the cable from the parts store. |

Re: Tired of cheap starters
Im not using welding cable but not the cheap autozone wire. I believe it's 1 or 2/0. Red top mounted under the bed with probably 5' of wire to the starter. My ground goes to the frame and then frame to motor and so on. I might need to add a ground cable motor to the frame conection off the battery. But we have always used the frame on out race truck and it's done fine

Re: Tired of cheap starters
I always just hooked the ground to the head. If I had electrical problems after that then I looked at additional grounds. Most of my ground issues were rust related and not system grounds. One exaple would be intermittant phantom tail lights.

Re: Tired of cheap starters
My response disapeared but I don't 100% use welding cable. Jst used it as a genaric term for ultra fine cable. You know the real flexible stuff. I always just run the ground to the head.

Re: Tired of cheap starters
I really don't think I'm having a ground issue. Just cheap 40 dollar starters. May work for some but not in my experience.

Re: Tired of cheap starters
I had a buddy that worked at the starter and alternator rebuilder for advance many years ago. They all got cleaned and tore down. The el cheapo got what was broke fixed. The 90 day actually got both brushes replaced. If you following what I am saying you can see it is a crap shoot at the discount auto place.

Re: Tired of cheap starters
Ya I know what you mean. That's why I'm spending a little more money for hopefully a beter product. Also it's made in USA. I like to support products made in house.
