New guy few questions

72 long bed 2wd 402 bbc turbo 400 trans has aluminum intake and headers.

Truck is used mostly to cruise around 55-65 but also draging the 1/8 mile. What gears would you guys do? Has the 3.08 I think really high anyway. Tires are a 31 right now but looking to go smaller.

Also wanting to do a carb wondering what cfm and Holley or edelbrock?

And a cam? Which one? Do I have to do valve springs?

Thanks for the help

Re: New guy few questions

First off welcome to the site, you'll find a lot of help and great info here. Now about your truck, your asking it to do two things that are as about on opposite sides of the spectrum as they could be. One hand a truck that can cruise easily at 55 and on the other a truck to run the 1/8 mi. what kind of times are you looking to get out of this project and how much driving are you gonna do on the street. Now keep in mind this needs to be an obtainable goal, don't say you want to run 5.50 and drive it 1000 miles a week, I don't think I could help with that set up. I did use to have an old Chevelle street car that ended up on the more side of super pro while still being legal to drive, the more towards the super pro it got the less I got to drive it on the street and when I did it drew much attention from Johnny law.[real loose converters will do that on a loud car]. I am just saying you need to think about your goals that want and we can help from there. Jim

Re: New guy few questions

I would go with 4.10 gears and a 750 holley. Mpg might hurt a bit but would improve your 1/8th mile time quite a bit. As for cam I cant help you but im sure someone will

"Truck is used mostly to cruise around 55-65 but also draging the 1/8 mile"

You need 2 trucks! Build a nice streeter and a cheap beater to drag

Re: New guy few questions

Your gonna be at the edge of the comfort zone there, a lots of people run then that low or lower. I think the :73's are the best your gonna find for the all around stuff period. as for the Cam go with a Extreme Energy from Comp Cams, around a 272 ish. I have always loved the cams I have gotten from them from plain little off the self small block stuff to the custom ground roller big block secret number black op stuff that my big block Chevelle had, they have always been on the ball. On top of that they are right up The road from me about 75 miles. Jim

Re: New guy few questions

Would I need new valve springs? The reason I'm asking is because a bunch of friends are doing a budget build contest! Be a dyno,1/8 mile a 250 mile cruiz, and might keep the truck after but not sure. And its an open diff as far as I know have not took the cover off yet, what carrier would I need. Thanks for all your help.
