Question Door check repair?

The door check on my driver's door is broken (one of the friction pieces fell off). Is there any way to repair it without removing the door or replacing the hinge? TIA.

Re: Door check repair?

What's a "door check"? Is that the thin strip that slides inside the hinge?

Yes. I'm not sure what the proper term should be, that's just what I've always called it.

Mine hasn't worked for a while. The wife complains about it all the time.

Re: Door check repair?

I searched this site a couple weeks ago for the same thing and didn't have much luck finding any answers. Some people were calling them a "wind check" but I'm not sure what the correct term would be called. I ended up buying a new upper hinge from a board member to replace mine but I also have the doors off which makes it easy to access right now. I wish someone would repop these without having to buy the whole hinge since they seem to fail quite often.

Here's a NOS retaining arm on Ebay.

I don't know if you'd be able to drive the pin out of the hinge with the door on though. I read some guys were either flipping over the friction pad on their old ones or even cutting a small piece of an old brake pad to replace it.

Re: Door check repair?

I have repaired the door stops with the doors on the truck. Driving the pin out is not too bad. If you need to replace the strap, make sure you get one that matches your old one as there are differences.

I make pads from brake material and glue them into the holders with 3M trim adhesive.

Re: Door check repair?

My door check/stop didn't break, but one of the pads fell out. Here's a picture of the hinge and the piece that is missing. I'm assuming I have to remove the pin, to remove the stop, in order to replace the friction pads. I have an extra hinge that I tried driving the pin out with my press...it wouldn't move...

Re: Door check repair?

I had a couple of hinges that the door check strap had broken on and some others that the pins had broken. So out of the 8 to 10 sets of hinges I have I still ended up with some new ones for the first set of uppers on the first 70 that I am doing. After the check had come apart there was not enough parts left to put it back together after the other hinges gave up their goods too. I found it easier to just give in and order a pair of new uppers.

Re: Door check repair?

That pin comes out pretty easy with a long thin punch if not rusted solid. Usually the passenger doors at pick a parts have decent pads. Might need to take apart several to get a few good pads.
