Steering column....

Down to trying to get a stock steering wheel on my truck. All the CD-ROMs show a spring to be placed under the commutator (that's what I call it....LMC calls it a Cancelling cam). Everyone i have talked to say as the same thing.

Problem is when I place it there and attempt to push the wheel on, it doesn't go down far enough to engage the splines. I have looked under the dash and in the engine compartment to see if the column has collapsed. It hasn't. The intermediate shaft is still good with the plastic pins intact.

Does anyone have a photo or dimensions of this spring? I have a spring but it looks like one at the bottom of the three speed shaft in the truck.

I need help .......... PLEASE!!!

Someone out here must have worked on a three speed column when rebuilding their truck.

If there's anyone in SoCal (or within 100 miles of SoCal) that has rebuilt and/or re-installed a three speed column in their truck, I'll gladly drive to you for help.

Cigar the spring goes on TOP of the cancelling cam on a 3 speed column. It goes under the cam on a tilt column...
The cancelling cam keeps the steering shaft centered in the upper bearing by wedging the tapered bottom of the cancelling cam down into the upper bearing using the spring to push it down.

OK..... # 1 - THANK YOU for the reply. As you can see, you're the only one to give me any idea as to how to get this back together. The truck came with an aftermarket wheel which I took off as the horn mechanism was bad.

I have tried numerous times to get the spring on under the cam and hope to compress the spring enough to get the wheel on far enough to get the nut started. There was no way to get the spring compressed and still get the nut started.

I will try that in a few minutes. But.....I get to dismantle the thing as I got the horn to work without the spring at all!! Just my luck.....

The truck is a 1971 with a stock 3 speed shift. It's too bad for me but a previous owner converted it to a floor shift. I'd love to have the shift back on the column.

Take the wheel off, put the nut back on the shaft, pull towards you with a pair of pliers. There should be some "slack" where the shaft moved downward in the column (gravity, ya' know) Mine drops about 3/4" and when you pull it to the top there is good spline engagement. Hope this helps!
