question steering column noise

Recently doing ps steering conversion. I took off manual gear box, and now my steering wheel makes a grinding noise. Is there tension on the wheel when its all hooked up to the gear box? This is kind of strange that all of a sudden, my steering wheel is making noises, almost sounds as if the bearing in the column is bad. Has anyone else ever experience this be fore? Thanks.

I don't understand why changing the box would affect the column or the steering wheel. It may just be a coincidence. The horn brush can make a lot of noise so I would suggest pulling the brush and put a small amount of grease on the end that contacts the turn signal cancelling cam.

There are two springs that put tension on the upper and lower bearings in the steering column so if you did nothing to affect the springs then the bearings should not be affected.

Thanks Jim strangest thing, yeah I agree with you, it must be coincidence. I'll disassemble the steering wheel tomorrow.

Is it hard to replace the bearing if needed? First I'll do as you said and see if this helps out.

I am pretty sure that I've had this problem for a while and didn't know it. after taking it apart I found the loose ball bearings.
