hood hinge / spring question '49 chevy
Hello, I'm Richard and new here, I own since 1996 a Chevrolet 3100 pickup truck, drove it for two years and took it apart for Restoration.
I have read a lot of threads and builds. I would like to ask help regarding my hood hinges/spring setup. I have problems to mount the springs to the hood bracket, please see att. photo's. Do I something wrong? Wrong hood? Thanks for any help, Richard. |

Re: hood hinge / spring question '49 chevy
it looks right to me. your hinges might just be loose so the hood is allowed to spread out when it is up. You should be able to lower the hood a little and push it in enough to get the spring bolt to line up better.

See if these will help.
There are a few more here that I took a few minutes ago on a 1-1/2 ton http://s173.photobucket.com/user/mr4...?sort=4&page=1 It is an absolute must that you have the correct shouldered bolts intended to hold the hood if you plan to have it line up correctly. The bolts are shown in #3 http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/ca/full.aspx?Page=23 Better photo here https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/search...le+Site+Search This is good info on getting the hood aligned. http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/bo...alignment.html I also have the pages out of the shop manual here: http://s173.photobucket.com/user/mr4...?sort=2&page=1 There several pages out of the manual that cover aligning the cab and front end sheet metal. I think it starts with the first page you see out of the manual and works though a number of pages.

Re: hood hinge / spring question '49 chevy
Thanks for your replies, cab has been mediablasted, so started with rust repairs. replacing the firewall first.
Could anyone help me with measurements: LH hood hinge bolt to RH hood hinge bolt (center) ? In the manual I found 24,5'' center CAB to center hinge bolt= 24,5 x 2 x 2,54 = 124,46 cm. I measure between center of the bolts 126,75 cm. (appr. 24,95'') Thanks in advance, Richard |

Re: hood hinge / spring question '49 chevy
As mentioned you need the shoulder bolts, also there is a left and right spring.
The measurement you want ...are you asking from bolt to bolt ? In other word s across the engine bay to see how wide the hood is? |

Re: hood hinge / spring question '49 chevy
I made a picture fron the Factory Assembly Manual and enlarged it, I conclude the measurement is taken from bracket en NOT from the bolt center.
So 24.95'' could be right. See attached picture. It would help me, if someone could confirm the measurement from bolt to bolt |

Don't know if this helps, but on my 49 im 48" from inside to inside of the lower brackets.
This is the bracket with 2 holes that the lower pivot arm is fastened to. |

Re: hood hinge / spring question '49 chevy
Richard.
Standing in a snow pile, streaching over the radiator with a bends in the middle tape measure. I get approx. 49,1/2" measuring from the top of the lower hood hinge bolt to the top of the lower hood hinge bolt. I tried to go center to center but I'm sure I was off a bit, But it lands in the 126cm measurement area .. |
