Vintage "looking" mud tires

Hey guys, I've been trying to find some radial 15" mud tires that look "vintage." I like the tall skinny look, aka: pizza cutters, but noting too tall. What's the best radial mud tire out there right now that looks like the old mud tires from the 70s'?

Google "Deestone D503." Its a similar tire. Bias ply though. I like he look too.

Only issue as stated already is these designs tend to be bias ply and the ride suffers considerbly because of it. Not an issue on a farm truck but is once you take it out on the highway.

I know what you mean by Vintage...I think.By your picture I think you mean a mud & snow tread design from back before the novelty tires like Mudders and Hawgs came out...and no radials. Heck,BFG A/Ts are a vintage design and so are TSLs as far as time goes. And back in the late-60s you had Gates Commandos,Armstrong Rhinos,and others. But,those I consider novelty. By novelty I mean they were made for fun off road. Desert Dogs,Remington Regals,and many many more are vintage from the early-mid '70s. I believe Universal Tires makes the Regals now,but are bias. Hey,bias is vintage!

I run Cooper mud & snow radials on my '92,Discoverer S/Ts I believe they are called (255/85). They look more traditional than others out there,especially from the sidewall. That's one next to a BFG 33/12.50

Me too! I've been thinking the same thing. I think I did recently see BFG had some? Ir someone else,but maybe they were A/Ts

Redcap,
Interco makes the SSR radial in a 35x10.5R15 and a 35x10.5R16. You won't like the price though. And also they aren't very vintage looking. I also wanted a 35x10.5 but the Intercos are to expensive and hard to come by.

This is a great idea. I'd love to see pictures once you select a tire.

Here is a possibility - how about using an Interco Narrow Super Swamper? One of the tire sizes equates to approx 34"x8" on a 16x6.5" rim. According to the Interco web site, it would even almost be period correct tread wise but not that size. Apparently the Swamper was originally introduced in the new 78 series size back in 1970.

I had some 7.50 x 16's on mine (see avatar) and while they were great off road in the mud and snow, in town and on highway over 25 mph the whine drove me nuts. When they wore out I switched to some all weather 245 R 16 radials with less aggressive tread.

I agree with Special-K completely on the Cooper Discoverer ST. IMO, it has the best vintage look out of any of the modern tire choices out there.

I'm using the term "vintage" loosely. I really just want to find a simple radial mud tire with a very plain sidewall. If the old style BGF MT was still available, I would go with it and mount the white walls in:

The Firestone Destination doesn't look too bad, but there again, the sidewall has too much going on. It may look just fine mounted up and on a truck, but looking at that pic, it's hard to tell. I'll look for some more pics of that one.

I think the word is "traditional" as much as vintage. In my eyes the Discoverer ST side lugs look identical to the first tire you showed. That's why I thought of them when I read your post. I don't think the tread looks so vintage/traditional. All traditional extra tractions had that split lug look from the side. Before radials I used to run bias Goodyear Extra Tractions or Armstrongs. I can only remember the name they changed it to...Tru Grip RV. The original name was some similar to Xtra Traction but don't think quite exactly. The Goodyears are what most all VFD brush units ran. No one else could afford them!

As far as performance,these STs eat!. They aren't swampers but they are a great on/off road tire. Day before yesterday I had to load my 5x10x2 trailer with heavy locust firewood. The only place along the road to pull was deep black mud and just enough room between trees for the truck and trailer. I pulled right into it dragging the trailer. Didn't get far before I had to put it in 4wd. I considered maybe I was foolish to expect to drag the loaded trailer out of it,especially coming up against the edge of the pavement and with the wheels cut hard. That wood is dense! I dumped four buckets in there. It was good and heavy. In 2nd/4hi it churned forward a couple feet and that was it. I backed up,put it in 3rd/4lo and let it eat!. That thing crawled right out of there,no problem. Great work truck tires

I went with the bfg AT white lettering out. I also wanted something that looked "semi" period correct.... this is as close as I could get in a 35x12.50R15

Their STA Trailbreaker® & STA Superlug® are available in bigger sizes (35" & ~37") but they don't look as close to the OP's original picture.
