why wont my truck stay running?

I had to take my qudrajet off a couple days ago and when I put it back on now the truck won't stay running. It'll start idle sort of high then die. I had the carb flipped upside down to scrape old gasket off. I replaced the carb gasket thinking that was the problem nope... checked a bunch of vacuum lines they all seem fine... then realized my choke is being weird it'll stay running if I hold it almost all the way down I can't seem to adjust it its a vacuum choke. I'm stumped as to why this is suddenly and issue.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check your PCV hose for splits.

Especially if you replaced with the thicker style gasket check that the bolts are torqued down to spec. ( I believe 12 ft*lbs.) Had a similar problem and searched everything until finally checked those bolts. The thicker gasket had compressed a bit and needed to be retorqued. Problem solved.

bolts are pretty tight i'm afraid to tighten them anymore because it's an aluminum intake, but it was replaced with the same part number gasket. just no rtv this time, my buddy rtv'd it last time i didn't this time.

Check with your buddy to see if this is why he RTVed it last time.

no it's my truck we were putting on the gasket and i told him not to rtv it and he did anyways... a carb gasket shouldn't need rtv'd in place

please any help? i really have no idea what the issue is i've pulled almost every vac line and plugged the port with a cap to test if that was the problem

Try a propane touch. Turn it on but don't light it and work your way around the base gasket. When it smoothes out or stays running you've found the leak. I think you have a leak at the base, that's why I was asking about the RTV. I realise that they shouldn't be RTVed but that is the only difference between the before and after running issues.

I have been waiting to read the fix here. I have a buddy that will not turn a Qjet upside down to work on whatever. He is scared of messing up the float or something. I turn them upside down all the time and never had a problem. I was waiting to see if it was a once in a million kind of thing and the float actually did hang up.

So when you "hold the choke down" is that closing the choke or opening it. I don't understand if you are holding down the choke plate or pushing down the counter wight on the side.

well rtv'd the gasket in place and still not working right but the if you mess with the choke you can get it to run but not right it was idling real high and just acting all sorts of funny

My son wrestled with a poor idle ect. on his 72 that has a 75 305 engine. His was a 2bbl. it had a factory two bbl aluminum intake manifold. He swapped the carb with a known good carb. no difference. At my suggestion he changed the intake manifold to a cast iron one. Cured his problem. His manifold had a heat crack in the exhaust crossover passage that was sucking exhaust into the intake.
