Yeah, it's really amazing what people will ask for stuff on eBay. Like this cluster! It's just a plain jane cluster but look at the price. --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33675

Now I can see why this one is this price. --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33675

The plain jane clusters hardly ever sell or even go for more than $25-30.

Tach clusters usually go for at least $100 min...and that is for one in bad shape.

Yeah. I just sold a cluster with a 100mph speedo for $46. I was quite suprised it went that high but I guess it was because of the speedo.

I just sold my old oil pressure, water temp, and speedo gauges, with the shift indicator on ebay for $53.00. These were the only gauges I had left, no cluster, just gauges by themselves.

I bet they could get more for them if they sold everything seperate.

Yep Swervin. There's actually a speedo on eBay now for $36 just buy itself. But it's a 100mph one. I sold a 85mph speedo several weeks ago for $21.

DANG! I HOPE he didn't pay that much for them. I have a set from a pull-off bed that are flawless, but I gave nothing for them, and there are fenders attached to them! I personally wouldn't give over $50 for them.

I don't blame you at all! Convenience definitely comes at a price and it's worth it most of the time. I have done the same thing quite a bit. Surfing eBay is more comfortable then sweating your butt off is some salvage yard.

Another thing he's saying the'll fit 73-87 but that's totally wrong the older trucks dont have the electronic dash's like the late 80's trucks do.

They will physically fit and bolt in but there's gonna be a wireing and maybe a connector issue if you try to use a '73 cluster in a '87 truck.

FYI:

Under closer observation, cluster looks like its from a 79-80 year rather than 73. Note the gas gauge has "Unleaded Fuel Only" which occurred after 78 and the electric oil pressure gauge was after the 77 model year I believe. A lot of Ebayers also like to use 73-87 just to get it included in the ebay search, even if its not applicable. Unfortunately there are a lot of naive people out there who buy things not knowing if it will work for them.

No no no,

I didn't mean the actual clusters shown were '73 or '87 i was just useing the two exstream years as an example cuz this guy makes it look like this part will fit every year truck from '73 all the way to '87.

And i wasn't shure of what years & when the change's took place.

You gave some very good example's of what i was trying to say

Also late 80's trucks ues the ECM to controll the insturment cluster and receive and supply information from it like cruise controll and vss input's form the speedo. and then send it to the trany for proper shifting point's and converter lock up and so on.

Just so you know, the ECM controls NOTHING in the instrument cluster whatsoever. All speedometers for these trucks are mechanical. The only thing different was if the truck came with cruise control, there was a little green box that dangled from 3 wires attatched to the speedo which was magnetic. The tranny isn't attatched to the ECM either and the only thing that controls its shift points is the TV cable. Are you confused and talking about the 88-up trucks or something? Then all you said would be true.

OH REEALY!

Well if you have a factory WDM follow along with me and let's see.

1st......we will look @ the cruise control schamatic now look @ the speed sensor buffer circuit #437 it show's this going to the Electronic Control Module=ECM.

2nd.....we will look @ the torque converter clutch schamatic and a small sub schamatic of the M40 relay circuit now find circuit #437 it refer's you to location 4-U67 that's section 4 intersection U 67 this schamatic shows the ECM and every circuit that come's into it.

Now look @ the ECM small connector and you will see that circuit #437 terminate's in cavity A10.

So this mean's that the insturment cluster IS tied into the ECM but not controled by it.

So your right.

But your wrong too.

The little green box that dangles from three wires.

It is called a speed sensor buffer or (VSS) and it isn't magnetic it is a LED and it mounts to the back of the speedo and in the speedo there is a two bladed propeller that spins when the truck is operated when a blade passes through the light beam it's reflected back to the vss and it processes this information and amplifies it and sends it to the cruise control module and the ECM.

And the ECM passes this info to the TCC and that mean's the trany is attached to the ECM.

When the trany is in 3rd gear the 3rd gear swich close's then the TCC solenoid circuit is completed to the ECM allowing TCC lock up or overdrive to be activated.

So it's safe to say that a speedo from an older truck can't be used in a computer controled truck.

But an older truck can use one form a computre controled truck.

Just so you know.

Im not the one that's confused.

Too many acronyms! ok, I was talking about an engine not from CA (no ECM) the only thing that would be there is the ESC controller leaving everything by itself. I figured the VSS was magnetic because the darn thing makes noises in my truck and causes it to surge sometimes. The VSS box is only in there with cruise control though. The tranny can also be wired for use without the computer. The only reason the tranny is hooked to the ECM is to read some of the sensors it is already plugged into (so they wouldn't have redundant sensors) to sense whether it should lock up or not - so TECHNICALLY it isn't controlled by the ECM, especially when there is no ECM. Fhew.... But you know how these things go.... Chevy does do some dumb things though - have you ever noticed how the oil pressure switch and choke are wired together?

BTW: computer controlled trucks of this era were CA only or 87s.
