Bought another square cab
Yesterday I bought a 83 1/2 ton chev. Bare bones truck 6 cyl and three speed. Very clean rust free truck. It has the best body of any Square cab that Ive owned. Its been parked for quite a considerable time . I don't know why the truck was parked.I towed it home behind my 66 GMC today. I plan to get it running. Do a few cosmetic improvements like change the rear bumper and mirrors for some chrome ones I have. Possibly do something with the wheels ect. And drive it awhile. It has a sizeable rodents nest on the engine, However the cab was so tight the critter never got inside.

Re: Bought another square cab
I went out and cleaned off the rats nest with a air hose Luckly the rodent had not chewed up any hoses or wires. looked the truck over really close. I crawled underneath and gave it a thorough inspection. The cab mounts rockers floor pans fender bottoms ect. are like new not even any surface rust. there are two rusty spots on the bed that need attention. one on each side at the rear quarter bottom edge. that it no other rust. the dash has gauges instead of idiot lights. speedo shows 00227 miles. so it has past the 100,000 mark.the radio is just AM no FM? it has power steering & power Brakes but no air cond. the engine turns over freely any way ill pull the spark plugs and soak the cyls with oil. empty the fuel tank change the oil & filter and likely try and crank it up in a few days.

Re: Bought another square cab
I finally got around to getting the truck running. The carb was dirty old stale evaporated gas had it gummed up. Cleaned that up and changed the oil & filter. installed a battery and gallon jug of gas. it wouldn't start backfired and caught the carbon fire, Ran a compression check and number three & four cyls had no compression. Pulled the valve cover all the time cussing all that smog plumbing. Any way found two pushrods off and the two intake valves stuck open. Heaed the valves with a small LP torch and pryed them up. used the rope in the cyl trick and removed the valve springs. put vice grips on the valve stems and heated the valve guides with the torch and squirting oil on the stems. finally got them freed up. changed the springs because I had heated up the originals earlier. also replaced the little rubber o rings. After that I got it started and let it run at a high idle. one lifter on number 4 intake collapsed and rattled fiercely. the exhaust leaked between the manifold in the cyl head. the bolts where missing. A quick check revealed that several of the bolts are snapped off. It ran Ok and didn't smoke or have excessive blowby. however after it warmed up the oil pressure dropped to about 20 pounds. and when you rev it up there is a lower end knock. not a rod. but its like a loose flywheel or a bad thrust main or a flat crank. As far as In concerned the engine is junk. Ill not spend any dollars trying to fix it. Ive got a really good older engine that isn't a intergrated head. However the truck has power steering. and power steering brackets for early engines are as rare as hens teeth. So now Im thinking Ive got a good 400 cu Pontiac engine that already has a stick flywheel clutch & bellhousing. There is a really good chance ill make a crossbreed out of the truck.
