Exhaust manifold Q

Is it commonplace for a manifold to actually warp? My mechanic is saying that he thinks that the obnoxious tapping sound that is coming from my truck is due to the manifold being warped. Im not trying to doubt him, Ive just never had any experience with this problem. How do you check for that??

thanks!!

Re: Exhaust manifold Q

The best way to do that would be to pull it off the truck, and set a straight edge on the ports. But yes, it is possible, nothing that can't be easily fixed.

Yeah it can be fairly common on manifolds as old as these. I had mine surfaced. It's easy to isolate which manifold and check with your hand as well. Wear a latex glove or something similar and the air is easily felt.

Yes, they can warp. Best way to find if there's a leak is to cut a section of old garden hose about 3 feet in length. Place one end on your ear, and because it's stiff, you can place the other end anywhere on the engine without getting burned. You will definitely hear the puffing sound if it really is an exhaust leak. If it's not, you can move it around to try to determine the app. area it's coming from.
