Koolglide! My favorite tool
This has to be my new favorite tool as a carpet layer.
I learned about these in 2006 and went to a seminar and was certified to use one. Then I found out how much it and the seam tape cost. I couldn't justify the expense. Fast forward to a week ago..a place that I sub for has one and asked me if I would like to use it. One word...BET! Now the Koolglide is a seam iron. Not just a seam iron. It sits on top of the carpet, sends a radio frequency to the tape underneath the carpet. No smoke or odor from this thing. It doesn't get hot. My seams are nicer because the tape is so much thinner. There is absolutely no tape telegraphing. Man I love this thing. Ok, let's hear about what technology has done for your life to make your job easier/better.

Re: Koolglide! My favorite tool
Well, I read about a tool called a Koolglide on the internet. Does that count?

About the only thing technology does for me is help me read about old trucks... and keep in touch with a few folks.

Re: Koolglide! My favorite tool
Hey Bill, there are lots of carpet installers that have never heard of it. I wouldn't expect that most folks not in the biz know about it.

Yep, ultraglide, streetglide, roadglide and Koolglide.
It definitely is. I'm wondering if lockdoc has used one?

I'm a bit more old-school in my HD lingo.....Duo-Glide, Electraglide, Superglide, Wide Glide, etc.

There are some models everyone knows and they call everything else that name. Like Road King,I had a guy walk up and tell me all about he had a Road King just like my "every piece torn off and changed yet still looks all Harley" Heritage Softail that looks nothing like a Road King. Then again, the color changed on his bike three times before he stopped telling his story

Re: Koolglide! My favorite tool
I'd never heard of one either. Of course I did most of my carpet work when Shag was popular..... I haven't installed much since I retired from the floor and wall covering business, except for myself and family.... Old school works good enough for that. The only carpet I had much trouble with was Berber but I never ran my iron on the hottest setting either.
