How hard is it to change ignition mechanism?
It's getting stuck in the crank position. Not good. I have to turn it backwards. It's in my 85 c10 tilt steering column.
Thx y'all. |

There's a little hole underneath that you push in with a tiny screwdriver when it's in the run position and it pops right out. Easy peasy

Re: How hard is it to change ignition mechanism?
might be the spring loaded switch at the bottom of the collumn
the key switch is just a remote control for the real switch at the bottom. |

Not quite, I think you're thinking of previous columns. I just did mine over the weekend, you have to remove the steering wheel, dust cover, lock ring and turn signal cam. There is a small bolt that holds the ignition lock in place.

Re: How hard is it to change ignition mechanism?
Did one two weeks ago after losing my keys. I watched a couple YouTube videos and headed for the garage. It's actually a pretty easy job just take your time. Hour and a half later it was done. You'll want a steering wheel puller and something to compress the internals to get the main nut off. I built my own tools but you can usually rent these two tools from your local auto store.

Re: How hard is it to change ignition mechanism?
Once again, figure out if it is the ignition lock part in the column or the sliding ignition switch assembly that is on top of the column under the dash. The ignition lock assembly is connected to the sliding switch with a rod that works off of a cammed sliding rotational piece that attaches to the locking assembly. If that switch needs to be changed out, it can be done without taking the column out of the truck, but you have to take the bolts out of the column and drop it down from the dash. It also helps if you take the instrument panel loose, too.
You will need a steering wheel puller and a torx screwdriver to take the small bolt out that holds the locking mechanism in the column.
