Henry needs some new pipes......lets build some exhaust!!
OK, the SBC conversion is almost complete.....now we need some exhaust!!
Running some cheap Ebay Hugger Headers. The link is at the bottom. Room is tight out of the headers and headed to the back of the truck so I picked up a kick from Speedway. Pipes are now headed towards the back of the truck. I might do a slight offset up after the tranny cross member to get the pipes out of the way more. Does muffler placement count in terms of noise as a general rule? Cross over? Running 2-1/2" pipe, should it all be welded or should I use some band clamps to make removal easier. Looks like on the passenger side I will have to drop at least part of the exhaust to remove the starter. Any wisdom???? http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-Small-Bl...85ef9e&vxp=mtr |

That I remember, your 350 is about stock right ? 2.5 is large pipe for a close to stock small block.

2 inch. No doubt. You've got a mild engine (no disrespect intended) and your truck is a cruiser, not a drag strip high rpm application.
Look at it this way, when GM put dual exhaust on 454 big block trucks they used 2.5". And that's a whole lot more engine than you're running.

I would use band clamps anywhere you need to get access to something or make it removeable. I put two of them on mine, one so that I can remove the Y pipe as an assembly, and one so I can remove the tailpipe as an assembly. A little planning here can make routine maintenance a simple task rather than a complicated chore.

My pics aren't that great, but I used flanges on my stuff, so it makes it easy to take about in pieces if I every need too....Jim

2" for duals on a stocker. 2 1/2 if you were running single.
Weld it all. Band clamps will loosen up and leak over time. How often are you going to change a starter and not be able to sawzall the pipe and reweld it. Balence pipe, H pipe or Y pipes are a good idea to pull or scavenge exhaust from the other side and it will cut down the rasp. When running the hangers, leave the rod long and heat it with a torch then wrap it around the bottom side of the pipe to cradle the pipe. Welding it to the side and cutting them short will tear the side out after long term if you have a lot of vibration loose mounts etc. Good job on building your own set up!

OK, back to 2" pipe. Does muffler location matter, or just wherever I have room? |

Mufflers are more effective the further back they are. When I say effective, I mean at muffling noise.

I used 2 1/2" pipe on mine and located the mufflers right under the back wall of the cab and then they exit in front of the rear tires with 4" tips on them. My 350 is running a Comp 270 cam.

That's one truck I built that I'm just fine with having sold it. But I did like the exhaust. A Tx Firefighter video production....
Call Brock. I'm telling you. It's like buying mufflers from your grandpa. Just a nice old man selling quality mufflers.

That's my 63 truck. It was my winter project in 2010. I sold it summer of 2011. Brockman Mellowtones in 2" from the engine to the bumper with no crossover pipe.
There is no drone or resonance with the Mellowtones. Just a growly rasp when you rev it. Very pleasant mufflers to live with on a daily basis. You can talk on the phone at 60 miles per hour without any trouble.

I. Running. Pair of Magnaflows on mine. I chose gem because they have a great sound when you run the rpms up but there's no drone when you're cruising, just a nice mellow throaty tone

the ad and tf running boards are below the frame this makes for easy routing of the exhaust
truk's exhaust system is all below the frame and dumps before the axle, 2.5'' duals, all welded into one piece. not running over the axle and out the back makes for a lot of noise, we were going to go over the axle before power tour but ran out of daylight.

For a mostly stock 350, I personally think headers dumped into a 3" single muffler, into a 3" tailpipe, is all that is needed.
Heats up and dries out the entire system better, too.

I'm also in the single 3" camp. One muffler to buy and not 2. One muffler to find a home for and not 2. Half as many U-bends to buy. Mine is an OEM muffler off a new Silverado.

Muffler choices are as varied among truck guys as our favorite color for a gals hair. it's all personal choice and what you like.
I've probably driven 200K with side pipes or very loud exhaust that exited in front of the rear wheels and not again for me. It's ok for a romp to town but when you hit the road on a several hundred mile road trip the drone wears you out. The Mellowtones that TX firefighter posted sound perfect to me. That is pretty close to what my old 51 Merc sounded like with the Olds 350R in it and I got compliments on the sound it gave off every time I pulled in some place with it. It was probably the best sounding car i ever owned after I had those pipes and mufflers put on it.
