What is the story on this truck?
Does anyone know the story on this truck? I saw it at the museum at the Talledega racetrack. The placard claims "World's fastest closed course pick up - 1976. It is a 1971 Cheyenne. I have tried to look up more information about it with no luck.

Re: What is the story on this truck?
It would be interesting to find out the history on it. I would think any aerodynamic gain made by that front air dam would be cancelled out by the use of camper mirrors tho.

Re: What is the story on this truck?
The air dam is there to nail the front down on the race track, for traction in turns. If it is really that fast. It wouldn't cancel out any wind resistance.

Re: What is the story on this truck?
I wish I had taken more and better pics. I remember it said 125 mph on the side of the box. Enlarging the pic I can read that it was nascar sanctioned. I thought it would be something I could pull up on the internet, but there does not appear to be anything out there on this truck.
I agree that the front air dam would be useless, the truck was at stock height. It did have slicks all the way around which makes sense if you are doing high speed runs. |

Re: What is the story on this truck?
Thanks for the link. I must have been using the wrong key words as I could not come up with anything. It still would be neat to learn more of the story behind it.

Re: What is the story on this truck?
That truck set the record in Aug 1976 at Talledaga and I'd bet that the record has been eclipsed a time or two since then.
Dog gone fast for a full size truck to circle that speedway in 1976 at any rate. That probably means it hit 140 or 150 on the straights.

Re: What is the story on this truck?
I agree. It's probably something they started just because they could. Non-specific sponsored event. Build the fastest (known at the time) engine and throw it in a truck (which happened to be a ). Instant record since none existed before. Probably done every year for fun.
