Why do some SPIDs have plastic and others don't?

Mine is among those that do not, but its a pretty well documented truck and I have the build sheet and it came from an old man who bought it new, so I'm pretty confident it's the real, original SPID.

Some have plastic on them. Did it vary by plant, how much the supervisor drank the night before, or some fancy heuristic?

It was a year thing. The earlier trucks did not have them, seems to have changed in 71

My 70 GMC (atlanta plant/May 70) has the clear but my 70 GMC parts truck (freemont plant) does not. Since my truck is late in the model year the change may have started in some plantsprior to the 71 year roll out.

Re: Why do some SPIDs have plastic and others don't?

some collector at GM got tired of seeing where someone wrote all their oil change mileage on the SPID, and, voila! What 71Super said above is the case. I personally thought it came in at 72 - but then I remembered my 71 had a clear sheet over it also.

No...it's not.

Supervisors drinking wasn't really the problem.

In MY day (starting in 1979) it was a two step operation:

The SPID was printed on regular adhesive backed paper, and then there was a separate clear overlay (slightly larger) that was placed over the top.

So - it's possible a few could have missed the clear overlay if somebody got lazy or in the hole.

Re: Why do some SPIDs have plastic and others don't?

And mine's a 70 without it, so it must have happened sometime during that year.

We need a truck wiki for all of this trivia!
