Did I do ok?
I just bought a 1971 C10. 3 on the tree. Short step side. I paid $700 for her. It went up for sale today and I bought it today lol. I thought it was a good deal so I jumped on it.

Re: Did I do ok?
You did good. Lots of rust but that can be fixed.

Re: Did I do ok?
There is quite a bit of rust but I figure this winter I'd like to start on doing a frame off. I always loved theses body styles.

Re: Did I do ok?
It's taking a min to get used to this transmission. They relocated the 3 on the tree to the floor. I'm not a big fan. But it rides smooth and straight down the road. I've put about 30 miles on it today and no problem.

Just wondering too if I should keep the step side or get a fleet side.

Re: Did I do ok?
Looks good to me, if you go fleet keep the step bed for a trailer; you may want it back at some point.

Re: Did I do ok?
Where in Indiana are you? I'm from Fairmount...
$700 and it runs, can't beat that. I wouldn't tear it apart though. Make it safe and fun to drive, get the stance you want and enjoy the "patina"... they come apart and don't go back together a lot of times (ask me how I know). No sense in it looking like your jeep. Or do a driving restoration where you do little things bit by bit and keep it on the road. You'll have more fun that way

Re: Did I do ok?
I live in Morgantown. Not my jeep lol. I'm doing a favor for my buddy. I've done everything on the Jeep. I'm just waiting on the engine to get back from the machine shop.
I've never had one apart to the frame yet I'm pretty excited. I think I'll have to build a dolly or something that i could set the cab on while i do the frame |

Re: Did I do ok?
Nope, you did great!
Any time you can buy a truck for under a grand with a spare motor is a good day. Get it running good, drive it till the wheels fall off, and you can probably get your money back out of it again!

Reason being that because of the foot pressure required to actuate the manual disk brakes, you can really control them right to the point of lockup without going too far and skidding. Kind of a pre-anti-lock brake system to my mind. Yep you got a great deal on that truck IMHO, heck it would likely cost more than that just to replace the factory issue heavy duty drum brakes in my '69 C10 with aftermarket disk brake parts. ...oh, and I think the '67-'72 stepsides are much more rare around here than the fleetside beds, so that just adds to the cool factor as far as I'm concerned. |

Re: Did I do ok?
I paid more than that for a bare swb frame, so I think you did great.

Re: Did I do ok?
72 and maybe 71's had disc brakes... i'm not an expert on 2WD's though. Lots of guys have swapped spindles and brakes from newer trucks as well.
I made a wooden dolly for my cab... You can replace most parts with the cab on though. Check out our vendors and you'll see all of the replacement parts that you need. Cab corners, rockers, floor pans are pretty common. If there rust in the roof then you might have to look for a new cab or leave it alone. GMC Paul is from Indiana and has a ton of knowledge and parts.
