Picture request AD trucks

I have a request for those that have a Chevy or GMC AD truck to send me a few pictures of your original firewall, the roof line at the upper windshield, side cowls and inside back panel and gas fill.

The reason is I wanted to add it to the FAQ here on how to identify a truck that's in pieces which is the way many of us buy trucks and parts. Most think all AD cabs are the same but they have subtle differences between years that can make it hard to swap panels and explains why new panels don't fit as we think they should. It would also help when your cutting old panels for reuse you will know what year not to get them from.

1. Pictures should be frontal view of the original firewall not a smoothed or plugged firewall without engine if possible and the year on the Vin tag, not reg year, It should show the entire firewall and all the holes.

2. The side cowls,

3. The area at the pinch weld on the roof windshield in the middle of one side or the other.

4. The gas fill area and which side its on if it has one.

5. The inside back panel, a side view is fine.

Id the truck by year of the vin so we get the production year not the state title year. Series IE.. 3100 , 3600, 3800 or higher. How many windows, Make, either GMC or Chevy

If you have pictures of the front fender side view from a big bolt series send that along with series and year or a side view of a complete big bolt that show fender hood and front of the cab. that would work as well.

Send them to info@thoroco.com and as soon as I compile the information I'll post it up.

Thanks for your help in this.

Re: Picture request AD trucks

I did some checking this morning and found out that Chevy went from the windlace with the metal strips and screws holding it in to the channels that the windlace went in in the middle of 1949. I've had that cab and the bottom half of the 53 cab for over 20 years.

The cowl of the 49 cab and the back half of my other 51 cab will go together to make my stretched cab for my truck.

Chevy COE. By vin code data built Dec 1947

Inside back panel. I think it's the same for COE and standard cab.

Side view big bolt, no gas filler.

Hope it helps, Rob

Well, this is interesting. I just realized something: all the cabs have the same raised area off center on the bottom part of the upper fire wall panel. Ever wonder why that area is there? Well I'll tell you why, that is the mount location for the COE hood prop. Both cabs use the same upper fire wall piece.

This is the raised area I'm talking about. On COEs it is the mounting location for the hood support slider.

Re: Picture request AD trucks

This thread is going to be awesome. I would love to donate pictures but my cab has been changed to much to be sure what it is.

Your right. Its on all the cabs I have in the shop and out back. I had never notice it til now.. I suspect rather that redo the die they just left it in and only changed the second operation dies for moving holes and adding ribs . For your lower they would have had to have an entirely different dies. Your toe boards would only fit your truck series
