How do the rate h.p. #'s on crate motor's??? With stock intake,ram horn manifold's and quadrajet carb???? My crate motor is rated at 260 h.p. what would it take to make it 300 h.p.. I already put headder's, weiand duel plane intake, and edelbrock 650 carb.. Anybody have suggestion's for app. 300 h.p. Thank's for the help..

this is all the infor I have found for our crate

The universal ‘350 is a brand new long block used to cover most GM applications from ‘1970-1985 and will produce up to 260hp and 350 foot pounds of torque with a four-barrel carburetor and headers. The Universal '350 is great as a small block replacement or V-8 retrofit into any vehicle. This brand new crate engine comes with a GM warranty and is covered for 3 years or 50,000 miles in applicable GM vehicles only; basically any GM car or half ton pick-up truck ‘1970-1985 originally equipped with a ‘350ci. If your vehicle does not fit in the warranty guidelines, GM will cover the motor for 12 months or 12,000 miles, parts only. Please ask your salesman for complete warranty information.

The specs of the motor are as follows:
•(4) Bolt main block with a (2) piece rear main seal.
•Cast Iron Crank.
•LT/LT4 Powdered Metal connecting rods.
•Cast Pistons, (dished).
•Hydraulic flat tappet cam, (.383” intake / .401” exhaust) and a 112-degree lobe separation.
•Cast Iron Cylinder heads with a 76cc combustion chamber. (Non vortec design)
•8.5:1 compression ratio.
•Left or Right hand dipstick.
•(4) Quart oil pan.
•Timing tabs for a 6 ¾” or an 8” balancer.

Thank's wes, it sound's like we got the same motor (1200 $$ and some change) It pull's really good, but more is better...

Yeah more is always better. Every now and then I get bored and but the engine on desktop dyno. I don't know why, I still have the stock size tires and with the top off I have to be gentle with the accelerator at take off. I am constantly attratting cops (green topless truck), but then again more is better.

I wonder why the warranty only allows '70 and up. Why not '69s (in which the 350 came stock)?

Isn't that when they started to put emissions stuff on vehicles? That is the only thing I can think of.

You'll get the most "bang for your buck" buy changing the cam...the stock cam is really a wimp. With the mods you already have a cam would really wake it up.

What Tom said. Also, for some cheap horsepower you can port-match the intake and heads. All you need is a die grinder, an old pair of gaskets, and some spray paint. You'll have to pull the intake anyhow to change the cam.

Dont laugh, but that is the motor (except 1 piece rear seal) that I put in my GTA. Better numbers than the original L98. For truck use , these engines work great, up to about 4000 rpm, the torque is terrific which is why they seem to pull so hard. I guess I should have put the truck motor in the GTA, and put the GTA motor in the truck..
