Swapping from auto to manual trans

I'm considering swapping the automatic trans in my truck for a 3 speed with shift on the floor. Does this make me insane? I can get the manual for free (needs rebuild, but so does my automatic). I have a donor truck I can get everything but the floor shifter from.

Re: Swapping from auto to manual trans

If I was going to go to the trouble to swap, no way I would do a 3-speed. Kind of depends on how you use the truck, but I would do a truck 4 speed if I did any towing or a 5-speed if I was a cruiser. A 3-speed is just so limiting on what it does and the shifter never looks right IMHO.

Re: Swapping from auto to manual trans

I did read a few threads talking about the problems with making a shifter look right. The truck won't be used for hauling or towing. Mainly it's gonna be a Sunday driver that is a respectable performer red light to red light (for a truck). People may laugh at the beefing up of a truck, but I love these trucks...and let's face it, if I had a bicycle I'm gonna try to make it go faster and sound better.

I know that performance (power shifting) the famed muncie is a popular route, but most of them I see are $700-1200 and that's not including clutch plate, petal assembly, petal linkage, slave cylinder, etc
