HELP PLEASE! Fuel Gauge stuck @ 3.

I know it's been beaten down to death by now but I apparently can't figure it out. I have a 71 c10 with 350/350. The gas gauge, sending unit, and printed circuit board are all brand new.

With the ignition ON and the wire from Fuel/Fuse panel to a ground(my chassis) the gauge still reads past full at 3.

I'm using a spare piece of 16g wire that I had, is that too big/small of a wire to test the gauge with?

Does there need to be some type of wires connected to the post on back of the gauge or is the printed circuit supposed to take care of that?

I have been riding with a gas can in my bed in case I get stranded and that's getting pretty old! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Re: HELP PLEASE! Fuel Gauge stuck @ 3.

I'm no expert by any means, but I recently had an issue with my gas gauge, the problems weren't the same as yours so I won't go into details....I ended up needing a new gauge...but if yours is new then it's unlikely its defective.

I have a ground wire running from a bolt on the back of the gas gauge to a screw just above the parking brake.....I think there needs to be some kind of ground going to the cluster particularly the gas gauge.

Try to run a ground wire like I have and see if it makes any difference.

Good luck!

There should be a black wire with a clip on the end in tthe dash harness that should be attatched to the dash. If it isint there id try grounding the guage itself

Thanks for the replies, I will try and double check my grounds later this week. I hope that's all it is, not quite sure what else it could be if this doesn't work. Thanks again guys.
