RUSTOLEUM Paint Job! Spray or Roll?

I'll start this off by saying, I would not normally consider this but the economy forced me to thinking about this option! On YouTube there are many videos on spraying and/or rolling a vehicle with Rustoleum paint. Some videos make it look easy so I'm assuming as long as the paint is thinned properly and enough is applied, wet sanding will give you a nice smooth finish. I understand the pros and cons but has anyone tried this?











Without the equipment or place to give a vehicle a normal paint job this option looks do-able to me!

Plenty of tutorials all over the web. Doesn't get much cheaper. Probably will choose this option if I ever get to that point with my truck

You could probably pay Maaco to shoot your truck for a few hundred during one of their specials and get better results

Just keep in mind.........Internet pictures can make anything look good. Every speck of the rustoleum will have to be removed before painting the truck with regular auto paint in the future.

Oh I don't know!!! had my daughters car painted with Maacos $299 special
Could have done a better job with some spray paint

It is definitely hit or miss depending on what prep you do and what shop you go to. My brother's truck was peeling within a year but he didn't do any prep and didn't want to pay them to prep it. Neither one of us was surprised when the paint failed

The shop near me puts out some good work though and there are some threads on here with some great maaco paint jobs.

If you're on a budget like myself, I find this a plausible option. I see a h-ll of a lot of wet sanding in my future, lol!

Let's face it MAACO provides the best $300.00 paint job of anyone out there.

But the fact is the words MACCO and Quality go together like Oil & water on a dipstick , except their paint doesn't look as good

I've had good luck with it on some model A fenders.
The stuff takes forever to dry though. Weeks it seems like.
Maybe in Arizona (low humidity) it would be better.

Speaking from experience I sprayed an S10 Blazer with rustoleum black and it turned out great. You just need to thin it really well. It loses it's shine over a while but hey it was $40 bucks at Walmart. I'll see if I can find a pic and post it.

Check our summit racings line of auto paint. Its dirt cheap, and sprays great. I have used it on 2 trucks, and a 78 corvette. I have been more than happy with the results.

Spraying was much easier (although I didn't actually spray) to do a complete color change due to door jams and interior spaces. He only did 2 or 3 coats opposed to the 10 I did rolling it which made it much tougher, I plan on rolling about 6 more coats on next spring. Be sure to mix it properly with thinner and add some enamel hardener into it. If you prep, paint and sand correctly it'll look like any other vehicle on the road.

Sweeet truck! What kind of primer did you use and how was it applied?

In my case, I don"t have the skills to get a smooth finish. When I try to rattle can even a small metal piece, I find that the over spray from subsequent neighboring passes flies over the previously painted areas and ruins the glossy finish. Also, I find it hard to get just the right amount of paint to avoid runs.

I am looking at getting a gallon of urethane one step paint and having a local small cheap shop paint the truck for about $250. The paint looks about $150 per gallon.

If you are going through that much work why not use automotive paint? I'm not be sarcastic, I actually want to know. Is there any benefit that I don't know about?

They have plenty of budget automotive paints: Omni, Kirker, SPI, Summit, etc.

For me, I wanted a nice looking paint job but I still want to be able to have fun off-road with the truck. If I spent several thousand dollars I wouldn't feel as comfortable doing that. With the Rustoleum job if I scratch it I can easily sand it down and fix it with a roller in about an hour.

I have done mine and about 10 others all in Rustoleum....And they all worked out ok..But as said before. You will have to remove it ALL before you use regular paint as rustoleum uses oils in the paint to keep from rusting..

I sprayed it. Came out a bit blotchy because of the humidity so I need to redo a bit.

I followed this guys guide with the Canada version of rustoleum(tremclad) for a vehicle I was selling and it turned out great,little bit of sanding and some trial and errors with wetsanding too much in areas but yeah I wish I had picture it was gloss black.

I will be doing the gloss black roll on method on the 73 gmc 4x4 i just got it wont be as meticulous until next year, I already painted a few pieces,just anything to get rid of that rustic orange for now,lol

*edit I did find a pic the girl took on the phone after I rolled on the 73 lately, as well as i did this old white spoke wheel with rustoleum engine enamel, it works great for rims

I rolled Tremclad (Canadian equivalent of Rustoleum).

I suckered Home Depot into trying to colour-match the original blue as best they could. Came out a nicer hue.

I did not even thin the paint, just straight from the can. Three coats, sometimes scuffing in-between with a green scrubbie. Because of this, the paint is on THICK, and there is enough orange peel to give you canker sores. But, it's super easy to touch up. The paint texture hides my bodywork defects.

Why did I do this?

1) I am not willing to spend the time to make every panel perfect.

2) I am not willing to spray an iso-cyanite without a booth and breathable air.

3) I am not willing to spend the time and money to do this properly, knowing that it WILL rust again, it WILL get rock chips, and it WILL get door dings.

4) It is a truck. It will get used as a truck. I do not want to be afraid to drive it, to use it, or to leave it parked somewhere.

Would I do it again? Probably.

The pictures hide the surface well. It is nowhere near as good as it looks.

Thank you for your time and pics! What would you say the whole paint job cost you from start to finish? I'm a house painter so I won't be spending money on prep materials but since I intend to paint the inside of the bed I'm assuming the paint will be around $100?

$60 in paint. $15 in primer (needed for the white to cover well). CDN prices.

Couple rolls of painters tape. One roller per coat (three coats each colour).

I decided to stay with the original blue & white because my dash and door jams are the same color Just curious, what made you stay with the original color?

You said you didn't thin. What type of rollers did you use? Everything I read says that when you roll the paint on it creates small air bubbles.

Staying factory colours meant I didn't have to strip and paint the interior and jambs, which would annoy me if I didn't.
