Windshield washer not staying primed

My windshield washer will not stayed primed. My pump works great & my squirters are clean, but if it sits for a few hours or days it takes forever for it to get fluid back up to the squirters. It seems to have gotten worse since I shortened the supply line, I had way too much extra line coiled up inside the fender well & shortened it thinking it would get fluid up to the squirters quicker. But I guess I wrong about that. Any suggestions besides replacing the original pump with an electric pump?

You didn't say what year, but I'll assume it is under the dash like a 72. The pump manifold that the hoses attach to go bad, even if new. The manifold has the 3 small rubber valves, and if they don't seal, the pump won't pump. Even a brand new one from the parts store may be years old and have dried out valves that don't seal. Every time I think about the pump, I grind my teeth. What a stupid place to put it.

Yea sorry. It's a 68' & yep, it's under the dash & I have factory A/C in my truck too. Which makes it worse to get to, to repair, replace or modify. It works great, it's that it just doesn't seem to hold fluid in the line & takes forever for it to pump it back up for it to come out the squirters. I manually have to prime it to get it to work. I like the idea of installing an electric pump under the dash near the existing pump but I just put my dash all back together and really don't feel like tearing it all apart again.

Re: Windshield washer not staying primed

The easy fix might be to try a cheap check valve out of sight in the supply line between the reservoir and pump. A lot easier than getting to the pump.

Not sure this is the right size or the proper application...does say liquid in the title though.

Found this by searching ebay motors for "check valve". Lots more in various sizes including some for gas and diesel made of aluminum.

Good job! Now that's thinking outside the box. Now why didn't I think of that...lol I'm going to try that and let you know what the outcome is. Thanks!

Re: Windshield washer not staying primed

The original pump in my '71 didn't work when I got it so I installed an electric pump under the dash, and it still looses its prime. After the truck has sat for a while and I turn it on it takes at least 5 seconds for the pump to prime the whole system. So with an electric pump it still looses its prime but you don't have to manually prime it because the electric pump is strong enough to do that.

Re: Windshield washer not staying primed

Yep. A cheap check valve will do the trick.
